In order to secure an apprenticeship, you must first secure a contract with an employer. You must apply directly to an employer rather than to the training provider. Once you have found an employer to take you on as an apprentice, your employer must then register you as an apprentice with SOLAS. Your training will then be organised through the local ETB, Institute of Technology or Higher Education College. All apprenticeship courses are run subject to demand.

Course Summary

The aim of this course is to equip apprentices with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge necessary to work to the highest standard in this trade. Technician Electrical Instrumentation Technicians are typically employed by Food Processing and Pharmaceutical companies. In these companies they have a dual responsibility: they maintain the electrical services and plant, a task previously undertaken by electricians; they are also required to calibrate and maintain the process instrumentation equipment, a task previously undertaken by Instrument Mechanics.

The Student - Career Interests

This course is typically suited for people with the following Career Interests:

Realist

Realists are usually interested in 'things' - such as buildings, mechanics, equipment, tools, electronics etc. Their primary focus is dealing with these - as in building, fixing, operating or designing them. Involvement in these areas leads to high manual skills, or a fine aptitude for practical design - as found in the various forms of engineering.

Realists like to find practical solutions to problems using tools, technology and skilled work. Realists usually prefer to be active in their work environment, often do most of their work alone, and enjoy taking decisive action with a minimum amount of discussion and paperwork.
