Working Life

Role and Responsibilities 

The Transmission Editor is responsible for loading, timing, and checking transmission schedules, and for ensuring that the output of all channels is of the highest broadcast standard.

The main responsibilities of the role include uploading commercial spots and other interstitial content to servers, and ensuring that the broadcast schedule complies with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) timing regulations and on-air limits.

Education Route: A qualification in Broadcast Technology/Media Technology, TV & Film Production, or a related field may be beneficial.

Career Path to Transmission Editor:  Transmission Editors will have gained 5+ years’ experience in broadcast transmission and scheduling environments, with perhaps prior experience working in an assistant role in the gallery, or with an outside broadcast contractor.

Employment growth was above average for this occupation, and was primarily related to an increase of over 2,000 persons employed since 2022. There was a relatively high volume of online job adverts (Eurostat/CEDEFOP), mostly for advertising accounts managers.

Employment is spread across a number of roles within this occupational group with Census 2022 data indicating that journalists/editors, PR professionals and librarians accounted for the largest share; the numbers employed across these roles are too small to allow for any detailed analysis of the future outlook within this occupation but the data at present does not point to any issues in sourcing skills for these roles.
