Working Life

3D models are often categorised by technique into organic and non-organic types, as each requires different modeling approaches.

The modeler is primarily responsible for creating non-organic models such as props and environments, which are made using 3D modeling software.

Props and environments constitute the bulk of modelling requirements on most productions and demand the ability to model accurately and efficiently. For VFX work, modelers must accurately recreate on-set props and locations using reference materials.

Role and Responsibilities 

  • Creates clean and efficient models that satisfy the technical constraints of downstream departments, as well as the project’s publishing criteria and naming conventions.
  • Interprets reference images and concept art to prototype and iterate models based on feedback.
  • Optimises, refines, and corrects model geometry to meet the artistic requirements set by the modeling supervisor.
  • Responsible for UV mapping models to satisfy the needs of the texturing department.
  • Keeps up to date with the latest developments in 3D design, capture, and modeling tools and technologies.

  In-depth knowledge of 3D modeling software, particularly polygon modeling and UV creation, along with a general understanding of other CG disciplines.

  A refined artistic eye, with proven skills in art, visualisation, and drawing; extensive knowledge of 3D modeling is highly beneficial.

  A strong artistic sensibility for form, volume, and mass.

  The ability to take and implement feedback across multiple iterations and consistently deliver high-quality, realistic results.

Entry / Progression - Prop Modeler

Education Route: Modelers often have a degree in fine art, animation, or visual effects. They will have taken classes in 3D design, modeling, and digital sculpting. Ideally, they should have some experience of sculpture and building real-world maquettes.  Showreel and experience are very important for this role.

Career Path to Prop/Environment/Build Modeler: Junior modelers often start by creating simple props, then progress to more complex objects, and eventually work on hero assets. Modeling is sometimes an entry-level role, but you would still need a showreel that demonstrates the ability to model. 

Career Path from Prop/Environment/Build ModelerModeling supervisor. Many modelers with strong artistic skills move towards character modeling.

Labour Market Updates - Prop Modeler

Skills Gaps in the Irish Animation sector (Animation ireland June 2022). A key central issue was graduate skills in relevant animation software. Specific software requirements and competencies in pipeline and technical specifics were top of the list regarding skills gaps. While studios that produce 2D content have recently moved away from Adobe Animate (Adobe Flash) into Toon Boom Harmony packages, there are a number of studios using less common softwares such as Cel Action and Moho for their 2D content. Studios creating CGI content are largely using Autodesk Maya with some now moving towards open access softwares such as Blender. A massive 50% of Irish animation graduates are working for overseas studios (20%) or working remotely on adult animated content (30%).The remaining 20% of recent Irish animation graduates are not working in the sector.

The Skills Challenge for the Screen Sector in Ireland 2023. Despite the skills shortages there is no effective and efficient way to identify crew who are available for jobs or for crew to be able to identify what positions are available. Recruiting experienced crew is also a major issue. Notwithstanding the current skills shortages, the key message from the interviews and focus groups was that a larger production crew base will be required to meet future live action demand which is probably significantly larger than the size of the existing crew base. Key areas of focus for future skills needs include the areas of skills for sustainability and green production as well as digital and technology related skills, especially in relation to virtual production.

Employment growth was almost on a par with the national average for this occupation; employment grew strongly between 2021 and 2022 but declined slightly thereafter. Based on the CSO Census data, over a quarter were graphic designers, with other key roles including actors, authors/writers, photographers, artists and arts officers.

Employment permits issued in 2023 were primarily for roles in animation, film and TV. Online job adverts (Eurostat/CEDEFOP) related mainly to graphic designers. At present, the data does not indicate that issues exist in sourcing skills for this occupation.
