Working Life
The Rigging Technical Director
- Is responsible for creating, maintaining, and expanding rigs for a variety of props, vehicles, characters, and other CG assets that require animation.
- Collaborates closely with the animation team to develop intuitive, responsive rigs tailored to animators’ needs, and extends rigs to meet specific performance requirements for individual shots.
- Works with the modeling department to ensure models are suitable for rigging, adhering to the technical standards of the rigging department and guaranteeing rigs are pipeline-friendly.
- Interprets notes from the rigging supervisor, animation supervisors, and directors, delivering multiple rigging options to secure final rig approval efficiently.
- Has a strong understanding of pipeline challenges and technical problem-solving, building tools to support smooth delivery of rigs to the animation department.

Excellent technical skills and an in-depth knowledge or CG software such as Maya, Houdini, 3DsMax etc.
To be a creative problem solver who likes technical challenges and creating complex systems.
Is emphatic to animators' needs and understands that rigs should enable artistic performance.
Meticulous, with a keen eye for detail, and an excellent understanding of anatomy, musculature, movement, and timing.
An understanding of VFX pipelines and comfort with scripting languages such as Python and MEL.
Highly motivated, able to work independently with minimal supervision, and capable of solving technical problems under pressure to meet deadlines.
Strong communication skills to ensure important information is clearly conveyed within the rigging department and to other teams, particularly modeling and animation.

Entry / Progression - Rigging Technical Director
Education Route: Rigging TDs often have a degree in animation or visual effects. Ideally, they will have taken classes in animation, modeling, topology, rigging, and coding. Experience in life drawing, anatomy, dance, acting, and other movement studies is also highly beneficial.
Career Path to Rigging TD: Animation Department – riggers often start as the more technical animators or as a CG generalist.
Career Path from Texturing Artist: Rigging Supervisor, FX Artist.
This is generally not an entry-level role. Showreel and experience is very important for this role.

Employment growth was almost on a par with the national average for this occupation; employment grew strongly between 2021 and 2022 but declined slightly thereafter. Based on the CSO Census data, over a quarter were graphic designers, with other key roles including actors, authors/writers, photographers, artists and arts officers.
Employment permits issued in 2023 were primarily for roles in animation, film and TV. Online job adverts (Eurostat/CEDEFOP) related mainly to graphic designers. At present, the data does not indicate that issues exist in sourcing skills for this occupation.
