Roles

The following job roles are related to this career path:

A Visual Effects Lighting Artist simulates realistic lighting in digital scenes to ensure that CG elements match live-action footage in tone, mood, and consistency, enabling seamless visual integration.

Lighting is where the look and atmosphere of any CG elements are defined. This is where the various art assets from the other departments like modelling and animation come together.

Through careful balancing of lights and shaders, lighting artists make CG assets stand out and add realism that goes beyond photorealism. The goal is to create images that are atmospheric, moody, and cinematic—enhancing live-action photography while supporting the narrative.

The lighting department requires a balance between technical and artistic skillsets. The lighting artist (or lighter) has a lot of the same concerns that a cinematographer (DOP) would have onset.

Lighting artists must have a strong eye for colour, tone, and mood. They need to interpret the cinematographer’s intent and reflect it within the CG elements to align seamlessly with the live-action photography.

They play a crucial role in making CG feel believable, combining technical expertise with artistic judgment to produce images that not only look compelling but also render efficiently.

Lighting artists are responsible for visually balancing individual elements, enabling compositors to create a convincing and cohesive final image. Because the role involves managing numerous incoming assets from upstream departments, experience as a generalist is often valuable.

On smaller productions, the CG supervisor often doubles as the lighting supervisor, since this is the stage where all 3D departments' work converges before passing to the 2D team (Compositing). Individual sequences are typically assigned to lighting leads to ensure visual consistency across shots within a sequence.
