The role of the 2D department (also known as compositing or “comp” for short) is to seamlessly integrate all visual effects elements with the live-action plates of a shot.
This is where all the disparate parts come together to create the final shot. Compositing is at the end of the visual effects pipeline, and there is significant pressure to finalise (approve) the VFX shots. Time is limited, and the director’s expectations are very high, so compositors must work to the highest standards within tight deadlines.
To work in the compositing department, you should have some knowledge of the 3D pipeline and extensive expertise in the 2D pipeline, including compositing software such as Nuke or After Effects.
While compositing is often seen as artistic work, successful compositors require a high level of technical skill. You should understand image manipulation mathematics, multi-pass lighting, and be comfortable with coding and automating systems.
Additionally, an interest in cinematography, photography, fine art, coding, lighting, and colour is often beneficial.
