Roles

The following job roles are related to this career path:

The VFX Supervisor leads the VFX team, shaping creative vision, guiding a project from conception to completion, and collaborating with directors, producers, and clients to manage scope, cost, and schedule.

Supervision and management within VFX studios have evolved rapidly as these studios have grown in size. While there are now many layers of supervision and management to accommodate multinational studios, certain key roles are found on every production.

The most important are the CG supervisor, the 2D supervisor, and the VFX supervisor. On smaller productions, the CG supervisor and 2D supervisor roles may be combined. All of these roles are client-facing.

Generally, the CG and 2D supervisors focus on addressing in-house issues, while the VFX supervisor manages both internal and external matters, including client relations.

The CG supervisor is responsible for all 3D content on a production and oversees all the different 3D departments. The 2D supervisor operates at the same level as the CG supervisor.

Since compositing (2D) is at the end of the pipeline, this is where shots are finalised. The 2D supervisor must work closely with the VFX supervisor and director to ensure shots are finalised.

Other supervisors hold varying levels of importance depending on the nature of the production—for example, in animation-heavy productions, the Animation Supervisor can be a very senior role, on par with the 2D and CG Supervisors. The VFX Supervisor sits above all individual departments and acts as the direct point of contact for the clients.

On smaller productions or during the early post-production phase, supervisors are often expected to work directly on CG production tasks. As production size increases, their role becomes more managerial.

Supervisors spend large portions of their week running dailies, ensuring the team has all necessary resources, assisting individual team members, and meeting with CG/VFX supervisors, production, and other heads of department. This leaves little time for hands-on production work, so it is crucial for supervisors to delegate tasks effectively and empower the crew to tackle technical challenges.
