The Overseas Animation Supervisor leads the overseas team, ensuring performance continuity and communication between the parent studio’s directors and the animation team throughout the production.

Working Life

The Overseas Animation Supervisor is responsible for the supervision and leadership of the overseas animation team. They would be situated in the collaborating animation company in order to have a direct line of communication between the parent studio’s animation director and the overseas animation animation team.

In collaboration with the directors and animation director, the overseas animation supervisor maintains the continuity of performance throughout a show/feature within the overseas animation studio.

The overseas animation supervisor would relocate to the overseas animation studio and operate communications from there.

The overseas animation supervisor: 

  • Runs animation dailies, ensures animation quality control, and performance consistency.
  • Interprets director’s needs and provides constructive feedback to crew.
  • Works in partnership with production to correctly cast shots to animators and ensure continuity of performance while meeting all schedules and highest standards
  • Runs workshops and animation training within the overseas animation studio.
  • Is responsible for clear lines of communication between the animation team, other departments, and production.
  • Works closely with the rigging department to ensure the delivery of rigs that will meet an animator’s need for control, functionality, usability, and performance.
  • Implements the specific animation pipeline requirements of a particular project.
  • Tests and deploys tools in a high-pressure production environment.
  • Documents and manages research, and disseminates all show workflows and performance references to the animation team to ensure consistency.
  • Works closely with FX supervisor to ensure primary animation and secondary animation (cloth, hair, wardrobe etc.) are delivered to the highest standards.
  • Works closely with production, providing performance feedback, mentoring and maintaining positive moral within the team.
  • Is responsible for hitting animation targets according to the schedule with support from production.
  • Communicates daily with the parent company with feedback on the overseas studios’ performance and strategises ways to make sure the quality of the animation is to the correct standard.

To succeed at this job, you need:

  Several years experience in the animation department.

  A thorough understanding of animation techniques and technologies.

  In-depth knowledge of CG software tools.

  Excellent aesthetic judgments – keen understanding of composition, cinematic design, and working to live-action constraints and performances.

  Excellent spatial awareness and a feel for movement and timing.

  Keen eye for weight, balance, understanding of animation principles, and aesthetics in motion.

  Excellent performance judgments and can give constructive feedback that enhances choreography and the performance. 

  Great organisational skills and the ability to manage a very busy team while meeting production timetables and budgets.
