Working Life
The Technical Supervisor ensures that all Outside Broadcast (OB) unit and hired broadcast systems operate correctly, overseeing their setup and maintenance under the direction of the unit manager.
Role and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the unit manager, the technical supervisor is responsible for the maintenance and technical functioning of all broadcast systems, equipment, and software integral to the OB Unit, as well as any equipment hired specifically for a job.
Although planning and related operations take place at the OB company’s facilities, during production the technical supervisor must work in a variety of locations, including TV studios, sound stages, sports stadiums, and any site central to an event or TV series.
The work begins at the planning and pre-production stage, with the technical supervisor collaborating closely with the unit manager to agree on the job specifications and set up the OB Unit accordingly. During production days, the role demands full knowledge and control of all technical functions across the equipment and technologies deployed.
The technical supervisor will pre-design and programme the Virtual Studio Manager (VSM) system to meet the specific requirements of the show, its producer, and the broadcaster. The technical supervisor is also responsible for all transmission links on location.
An important non-operational dimension of the role is staying up-to-date with new technologies, systems, and emerging trends within the sector.
