Working Life

The Account Executive is the link between client and agency.

He/she briefs the agency personnel on the client's requirements and co-ordinates the efforts of the entire agency staff; presents proposals to the client and supervises the launching and progress of the advertising campaign.

They work as part of a close team, are responsible for budgets and the legal requirements for advertisements:

  • Creating a portfolio of client accounts and monitoring the ongoing activities related to them.
  • Managing, reviewing progress and delivering the client’s advertisement projects.
  • Conducting meetings with the clients as well as informing them about the current work status of their projects.
  • Establishing relationships with new clients and maintaining and nurturing business relationships with existing clients.
  • Identifying accounts whose revenue may be shrinking so as to address any ‘at risk’ customers and reach out to these accounts to ensure they are retained.
  • Monitoring work performance of colleagues and setting sales targets.
  • Recruiting and training new account executives.

Qualities - Advertising Account Manager

As most of your time will be spent in discussion with clients and colleagues, communication and interpersonal skills are important. You'll need the confidence to win clients' accounts and persuasive powers to convince them about your agency's ideas. A systematic approach to work, staff management skills and an interest in business are useful.    
   
Good report writing and presentation skills are also desirable in an advertising executive. You also need to be able to work as part of a team as well as on your own.

Entry / Progression - Advertising Account Manager

For most advertising executives, graduates degrees in marketing, media and economics are all suitable starting points. Labour Market Updates - Advertising Account Manager

This information has been derived from the Solas National Skills Bulletin (2024).

Employment growth was above average for this occupation, having grown steadily between 2018 and 2021; employment levels have declined annually since (and by 3,000 in 2023). Online job adverts (Eurostat/CEDEFOP) were mainly for buyers and procurement officers. Approximately half of the new employment permits issued in 2023 were for the ICT sector (although the share in employment in this sector was small); roles included marketing executives, procurement and supply chain roles and account managers/strategists.

Difficult-to-fill vacancies in the Recruitment Agency Survey related to procurement and supply chain roles. Skills identified in the Spotlight on Skills data included bid preparation, procurement, and tender writing skills.
