Working Life
Botanists study plants, including their reproduction and growth, distribution, and how pests and diseases affect them. They study plant life both in the laboratory and in their natural environment.
Botanists often work in research and development for agricultural, forestry or environmental bodies. In agriculture, botanists may study how to stop pests damaging crops, perhaps through biological control (for example, introducing other species to eat the pests). Botanists may change plants' genes through genetic modification (GM) to increase crop yields, or to make crops more resistant to pests and diseases.
Extinction threatens many plant species, so botany and plant ecology have become important aspects of conservation. In fieldwork, botanists may record the number and types of different species in one area or monitor the impact of pollution on a region's plant life.
Botanists can work in a variety of sub-fields, such as a dendrologist, applying the science of wooded plants or as an agronomist, where they will deal with crop production in agriculture.

Qualities - Botanist
As a botanist, you will need to be accurate and methodical in field and laboratory work, and be prepared to repeat experiments many times. A high level of scientific ability and understanding would be needed especially in biology and chemistry. Knowledge of sophisticated technology as well as good computer skills would also be very helpful.

Creative people are drawn to careers and activities that enable them to take responsibility for the design, layout or sensory impact of something (visual, auditory etc). The main qualification route is with a degree in Botany, relevant degree courses are offered at most of the major universities throughout the country. Labour Market Updates - Botanist

This information has been derived from the Solas National Skills Bulletin (2024).
Average annual employment growth over the five-year period was above average for this occupation, although employment levels remained unchanged between 2022 and 2023. At 26%, the share of non-Irish citizens employed in this occupation was above the national average. Despite a fall in the number of online job adverts (Eurostat/CEDEFOP) in 2023, scientists were the fifth most frequently occurring occupation across all online job adverts.
Employment permits issued were across various roles in industry and health including bio-process associates, QC chemists, and medical scientists. The Recruitment Agency Survey highlighted issues with recruiting process/analytical scientists and microbiologists, while Skills for Growth data identified the need for skills in good manufacturing practices (GMP), quality and validation. The number of biochemistry and chemistry awards made at third level has been growing annually for several years and reached nearly 900 and 1,000 awards respectively in 2022 (up from 580 and 800 in 2018). Similarly, the number of awards made in medical or pharma/bio-pharma fields grew to 1,400 (up from 1,300 in 2018).
A high level of demand for these occupations remains evident, with shortages expected to persist, particularly in the life sciences sector, for those with experience and/or in niche areas.
