The Work

The 2D Supervisor works closely with the CG Supervisor and VFX Supervisor to ensure that all elements of the final shot align with the director’s vision. This is a senior and pivotal role within the team. Artistic expectations are extremely high, as this is where all VFX shots are finalised. This is also a client-facing position, requiring strong communication and organisational skills. Directors and VFX supervisors may have ambitious creative visions, so managing expectations and timelines is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the quality and consistency of final shots, overseeing the creative and technical output of the Compositing team.

  • Monitor client feedback and provide clear, actionable notes to compositors to help achieve final director approval.

  • Collaborate with the VFX supervisor, CG supervisor, lighting supervisor, pipeline, and editorial departments to help define the compositing and colour pipelines.

  • Evaluate and guide the creative and technical approach to complex compositing challenges, with a focus on optimising and standardising workflows across the project.

  • Maintain ongoing and efficient communication with the lighting team to ensure renders meet both artistic and technical standards.

  • Work with production to ensure schedules, crewing, and delivery timelines are met, and that staff are appropriately assigned and supported.

  • Responsible for project-wide documentation of compositing workflows, mentoring team members, and disseminating relevant information.

  • Stay up to date with advancements in tools, software, and techniques relevant to the compositing pipeline.

  • Script, plan, and create animated narrative sequences under tight deadlines, using computer software and hand drawing techniques.
  • Develop briefings, brochures, multimedia presentations, web pages, promotional products, technical illustrations, and computer artwork for use in products, technical manuals, literature, newsletters, and slide shows.
  • Create and install special effects as required by the script, mixing chemicals and fabricating needed parts from wood, metal, plaster, and clay.

Entry - Supervisor 2D Animation

Several years of in-depth experience with photo-real compositing, ideally in a leadership role, expertise with Compositing software, in-depth understanding of the full VFX pipeline.

2D Supervisor, often have a degree in Animation, Visual Effects or Film Studies and years of production experience. This is not an entry-level role; Show reel and CG production experience are requirements.

An understanding of composition, cinematography, and editing. You can work across different looks and styles that is consistent with the Directors vision.

Labour Market Updates - Supervisor 2D Animation

This information has been derived from the Solas National Skills Bulletin (2024).

Employment growth was almost on a par with the national average for this occupation; employment grew strongly between 2021 and 2022 but declined slightly thereafter. Based on the CSO Census data, over a quarter were graphic designers, with other key roles including actors, authors/writers, photographers, artists and arts officers.

Employment permits issued in 2023 were primarily for roles in animation, film and TV. Online job adverts (Eurostat/CEDEFOP) related mainly to graphic designers. At present, the data does not indicate that issues exist in sourcing skills for this occupation.
