The Work

The Sound Assistant works under the direction of the sound supervisor, supporting them in ensuring the quality of all audio recorded on location or in the studio for multi-camera television productions.

A sound assistant must have excellent aural skills, a good knowledge of how the principal sound technologies and devices function, and a proven track record in a live TV environment.

Role and Responsibilities 

  • Ensures that all equipment, cables, and consumables are packed according to the specifications outlined for the project before going on location.
  • Sets up all sound equipment and positions and tests all microphones for the production on location. 
  • Looks after the maintenance and repair of sound equipment.
  • Become familiar with the TV show's script and running order to effectively support the sound supervisor and cover for the location recordist if necessary.

  • In the context of sports coverage, develop a working knowledge of the sport being covered to anticipate key moments and ensure accurate audio capture.

  • Requires the experience and ability to switch repeatedly between different types of TV broadcasts, whether they are sports events or talent shows.

  • The capacity for teamwork, an ability to take direction, and to work to the highest levels of detail.
