Applications For Agriculture Courses At Kildalton College Now Open
Kildalton College is the largest of the seven Teagasc colleges in the country providing courses in Agriculture, Horticulture and Equine Studies. The Kildalton farm consists of 167 hectares of mixed dairy, tillage and drystock enterprises. These farm enterprises are a vital resource for student training, skills development and skills proficiency testing. The enterprises are also used as monitor farms providing performance and financial information for open days and farm walks.
Kildalton College offers a wide variety of agricultural courses to prospective students. These courses are provided from an entry point at QQI level five certificate courses with progression in a range of courses to level seven and eight higher degree courses provided primarily in conjunction with Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) and also with University College Dublin (UCD).
Agriculture Courses
As part of our agriculture course students have the following options:

Duration:
2 years at Kildalton College, including a Practical Learning Period working with a host farmer.
Course Structure and Content
The course consists of a combination of formal course work and a period of practical learning on a host farm. The formal course work is split 50:50 between practical/ skills training at Kildalton College enterprise units and classroom (theoretical) sessions. The course consists of a range of mandatory and elective modules.
On successful completion of the course students are awarded the QQI Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture. Year 1 (Level 5) of this course does not meet the training requirement for Stamp Duty Exemption. On sucessful completion of Year 2 (Level 6) students can achieve the Green Cert.

Dairy:
At Kildalton College we run a 2 year, full-time dairy education course. The aim of this course is to equip graduates with the knowledge, skills and capabilities for the role of dairy herd technician/manager on their home farm or as an employed farm technician, herd manager.
Each lecturer at Kildalton College carries responsibility for the farm enterprise which they teach. This ensures that the teaching is based on practical experience and good husbandry.
Students who successfully complete the level 6 of this course meet the training requirements for Stamp Duty Exemption and DAFM Schemes.

Drystock:
At Kildalton College we offer a 2 year full-time drystock education option. The aim of this course is to equip the graduate with knowledge, skills and capabilities for a role as a herd – flock manager or farm technician. Graduates of this option may also seek employment opportunities in the broader agri-food sector. Students who successfully complete the level 6 of this course meet the training requirements for Stamp Duty Exemption and DAFM Schemes.

Crops and Machinery:
This 2 year full-time Crops and Machinery Management option is offered at Teagasc Kildalton College. This course provides the student with the latest technology, information and management skills necessary for a career in the crop and machinery industry. Students who successfully complete the level 6 of this course meet the training requirements for Stamp Duty Exemption and DAFM Schemes.

Part time:
Green Cert
The ‘Green Cert’ refers to a list of land based courses which qualifies a person as a ‘trained farmer’. Having a ‘Green Cert’ is one of the conditions of stamp duty exemption on the transfer of a farm to a close relation such as a son or daughter. It also meets the criteria for schemes or grants that may be available from time to time e.g. Young Farm Scheme.
In Teagasc Kildalton College it is possible to achieve a ‘Green Cert’ on completion of either a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Agriculture or the Degree in Agriculture with WIT (a Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture does not meet the requirements for a 'Green Cert').
