March 2023 was an exciting month for students at Crumlin College of Further Education. For the first time since lockdown, students were able to participate in the Erasmus + exchange programme. A group of six Culinary Arts students travelled to Groningen in The Netherlands. The students spent 2 weeks at our partner college, Nooderpoort Euroborg. Whilst there, the students had a full timetable of activities including: a workshop on beer brewing, a food tour of Groningen, a masterclass in preparing vegetarian dishes, a baking course in the college bakery, preparing a fine dining À la Carte experience for a number of invited guests and field trips outside of Groningen with a culinary theme. In addition, all students completed four days of work experience in some of Groningen’s finest dining establishments; a city renowned for its eateries. Groningen is a bustling student city with lots to see and do. All the students agreed that participating in the Erasmus Programme was a wonderfully enriching experience for them. It has really motivated them to continue their culinary arts studies and has opened them up to a world of opportunities that their chosen career path can offer them.
As part of a separate programme, a Commis Chef apprentice and a Culinary Arts student travelled to South-West France to participate in the Franco-Irish Culinary Arts Cook and Serve (FICAHT) finals in France. The finals took place in Argèles-sur-Mer. This was a wonderful achievement for the students involved and allowed them to acquire new skills in a scenic setting.
