FET Course of the Week: 5M5146 - Sports Science with Adventure Activities at Galway Technical Institute

Sports Science with Adventure Activities is a fulltime Level 5 PLC course at Galway Technical Institute with progression to CAO Courses. It runs from September – May.  

This course has been designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to pursue a career or further studies in the outdoor leisure industry. The course has a very high practical element which involves participants being involved in physical activity on a daily basis. It also provides students with a foundation in Nutrition and a work experience. This course is an applied learning programme. 

Experiential learning is at the core ensuring that students gain the relevant hands on experience adventure and outdoor activities.

Entry Requirements:

For this course you are required to have completed a Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied, OR equivalent Letter of recommendation from a recognised club. Mature students are also welcomed to apply via an Interview applicants and Skills & Fitness Test.

Course Content:

In this PLC you will cover a range of modules that will upskill you for the future. They include:

• Sport & Recreation Studies
• Adventure Activities
• Sports Injury Prevention
• Sports Anatomy & Physiology
• Exercise & Fitness
• Nutrition
• Communications
• Work Experience 

Students have the opportunity to travel to a European destination as part of the Erasmus+ programme for a fully funded 2/3 week work placements.

Upon completion you will be awarded a Certificate in Sport, Recreation & Exercise QQI 5M5146. This course prepares you for working in the Leisure, Sport & Fitness and Tourism & Hospitality Career Sectors.
