The purpose of mental health nursing is to promote mental health and wellbeing for individuals experiencing mental illness and psychological distress. This includes working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team to plan, support and deliver individualised nursing care.

The aim of the programme is to provide students with an opportunity to learn the essential knowledge, skills and competencies associated with mental health nursing. Students will develop fundamental nursing skills to enable them to provide care in a variety of healthcare environments. Students who successfully complete this five-year programme will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).

They may prefer thought to action, and enjoy the challenge of solving problems with sophiscticated technology. These types prefer mentally stimulating environments and often pay close attention to developments in their chosen field.
