Course Summary

This degree explores history, archaeology, languages, literature as well as all aspects of Medieval Celtic Studies. The diverse range of topics encompasses heroic literature and pre-historic archaeology, Otherworld tales and mythology, and gender and sexuality in medieval Celtic societies. The links between Ireland and the wider Celtic world are explored through literature and archaeology. 

This subject is one of 32 subjects in the Maynooth Bachelor of Arts Degree - MH101. The 32 subjects are timetabled in 6 groups. You can choose 2, 3 or 4 subjects in 1st year - a maximum 1 subject per group.

Most MH101 subjects require no prior knowledge.

Note: Some MH101 subjects require specific Leaving Certificate grades. These extra requirements are not checked by the CAO but are checked by the University when it comes to subject registration in September.

Investigative

The Investigative person will usually find a particular area of science to be of interest. They are inclined toward intellectual and analytical activities and enjoy observation and theory. They may prefer thought to action, and enjoy the challenge of solving problems with sophiscticated technology. These types prefer mentally stimulating environments and often pay close attention to developments in their chosen field.

Linguistic

The Linguistic's interests are usually focused on ideas and information exchange. They tend to like reading a lot, and enjoy discussion about what has been said. Some will want to write about their own ideas and may follow a path towards journalism, story writing or editing. Others will develop skills in other languages, perhaps finding work as a translator or interpreter. Most Linguistic types will enjoy the opportunity to teach or instruct people in a topic they are interested in.

Through your studies you’ll develop a combination of analytical skills in literature, history and language – useful assets for critical thinking in a variety of careers. Graduates of Medieval Irish and Celtic Studies have found employment in heritage tourism and related areas, education, civil service, library work and Irish language publishing.
