Social Care Work is described by CORU as a relationship-based approach to the purposeful planning and provision of care, protection, psychosocial support, and advocacy in partnership with vulnerable individuals and groups who experience marginalisation, disadvantage, or special needs.

The importance of Social Care Work to the functioning of Irish society cannot be underestimated. The profession challenges the mechanics of inequality and forges creative pathways towards a fairer, more inclusive society where all human beings are valued.

The Social person's interests focus on interacting with the people in their environment. In all cases, the Social person enjoys the personal contact with other people in preference to the impersonal dealings with things, data and ideas found in other groups.

Many will seek out positions where there is direct contact with the public in some advisory role, whether a receptionist or a counsellor. Social people are motivated by an interest in different types of people and like diversity in their work environments. Many are drawn towards careers in the caring professions and social welfare area, whilst others prefer teaching and other 'informing' roles.

Qualified Social Care Workers typically work in a supportive role with people of all ages across communities, in both day services and in residential care. Typically, Social Care Workers, Social Workers and other caring professionals work together in interdisciplinary teams across a wide variety of services, and with a wide variety of service users such as children and adults who have intellectual or physical disabilities, children and adolescents in residential care, people who experience homelessness, people with addiction problems, recent immigrants, families in the community experiencing challenges and older people with care needs.
