Course Summary
The BA (Hons) Early Childhood Care & Education (1-Year Top-Up) is designed for individuals who already hold a level 7 BA (Ord) in Early Childhood Care & Education or an equivalent qualification and wish to progress to a level 8 honours degree.
Delivered through blended learning, the programme is completed over approximately 8-10 months, allowing students to continue working while advancing their qualifications.
Students develop advanced professional practice, critical thinking, leadership capability, and applied research skills that support career progression within the early years sector.
A key feature of the programme is a supervised research project, which can be completed within the student’s current workplace. This allows learners to apply research, reflective practice, and professional learning directly within their early years setting.
Graduates receive a BA (Hons) Early Childhood Care & Education awarded by University of Essex. The qualification is recognised at NFQ level 8 and meets the Professional Award Criteria for Early Childhood Care and Education.

This level 8 honours qualification enables graduates to pursue advanced professional and leadership roles within early childhood education and care.
Career opportunities may include:
- Room leader
- Early years manager
- Owner or manager of an early years setting
- Roles supporting children with additional needs/SEN
- Early years inspector (subject to experience requirements)
- Roles within County Childcare Committees or government agencies
Graduates are eligible for the DCDE (Department of Children, Disability and Equality) Graduate Premium and may also progress to:
- Professional Master of Education (Primary), subject to entry requirements
- Postgraduate study at Master’s or Doctoral level
- Roles in inspection, policy development, administration, and service monitoring
- Teaching roles in further and adult education, with additional qualifications
