Course Summary
If you love science and maths, and would like to share your enthusiasm, interest and knowledge with young people, you’ll thrive on the BSc in Science and Mathematics Education. Science and maths teachers work to develop their pupils’ understanding of the world around them and to educate future generations of scientists, engineers and technologists, not to mention citizens who are scientifically, mathematically and technically literate.
You’ll build a strong foundation in key areas of education, mathematics and either physics or chemistry, developing essential mathematical thinking skills, and scientific practices and ways of working throughout the four years. You’ll also study the history, psychology, sociology and philosophy of education, as well as undertaking curriculum studies.
Gaining practical real-world experience
During the course, you’ll spend at least 24 weeks on placement in post-primary schools and you can also complete a 12-week paid internship in industry as part of the STEM Teacher Internship programme.

Career Interests

Social
The Social person's interests focus on interacting with the people in their environment. In all cases, the Social person enjoys the personal contact with other people in preference to the impersonal dealings with things, data and ideas found in other groups.
Many will seek out positions where there is direct contact with the public in some advisory role, whether a receptionist or a counsellor. Social people are motivated by an interest in different types of people and like diversity in their work environments. Many are drawn towards careers in the caring professions and social welfare area, whilst others prefer teaching and other 'informing' roles.
Investigative
The Investigative person will usually find a particular area of science to be of interest. They are inclined toward intellectual and analytical activities and enjoy observation and theory. They may prefer thought to action, and enjoy the challenge of solving problems with sophiscticated technology. These types prefer mentally stimulating environments and often pay close attention to developments in their chosen field.
Career Progression
DCU Science and Mathematics Education graduates are actively sought after by Principals both in Ireland and internationally. The majority of our graduates take up careers in post-primary education, teaching two of chemistry, physics or mathematics, as well as Junior Cycle science and mathematics. Other graduates have pursued careers in industry-based training and development.
