This Higher National Diploma is a qualification that has been developed to prepare people for employment in Social Care. It is a particularly useful qualification for those intending to pursue higher education in Social Work, Applied Social Studies, Sociology and Psychology through non-traditional routes. This is a two year full-time course. Each week students must attend the College for four days of tuition in first year three days in second year. On the remaining days students must fulfil extensive work placement requirements. Placements are normally organised by the student, with the support of the Course Director.

Social
The Social person's interests focus on interacting with the people in their environment. In all cases, the Social person enjoys the personal contact with other people in preference to the impersonal dealings with things, data and ideas found in other groups.
Many will seek out positions where there is direct contact with the public in some advisory role, whether a receptionist or a counsellor. Social people are motivated by an interest in different types of people and like diversity in their work environments. Many are drawn towards careers in the caring professions and social welfare area, whilst others prefer teaching and other 'informing' roles.

Career Progression
Graduates of the course can potentially find employment in the state as well as in the community based sectors, working with children and young people in residential care, older people, people with dependency issues. Organisations in which students have secured employment include, Cerebral Palsy Ireland, Cheeverstown House, Menni Services and Barnardos.
Graduates have gone on to obtain degrees in Social Work, Social Care, Psychology, and Applied Social Studies.
