I was born into a fishing family and had an interest in it all my life.

My father, my grandfather and my great uncle.

Annoying my father into giving me a start!

Describe a typical day?

Maintaining the boat, ensuring it is kept clean and safe. 
Mainting the nets and the other tools / equipment that we use 

What are the main tasks and responsibilities?

Power Block / Crane Driver as well as Deckhand

What are the main challenges?

Trying to work as safe as possible which isn't that easy. 

What do you like most?

John Oglesby, Deck Hand

Getting to travel and be part of a team that is good at what they do. 

Is there anything that isn't great?

John Oglesby, Deck Hand

Not really, the challenges are good to help find a better way to do things and it's a chance to learn more. 

What particular skills do you bring to your workplace?

John Oglesby, Deck Hand

I have completed various BIM training certs, I have a knowledge of nets and a general knowledge of boat operations. 

What subjects did you take in school and how have these influenced your career path?

John Oglesby, Deck Hand

School didn't interest me I always knew I wanted to be a fisherman / work on boats.

What aspects of your education have proven most important for your job?

BIM Deckhand Programme and Skipper Second Hand Full (SHF) Training 

What have been the most rewarding events in your career so far?

John Oglesby, Deck Hand

Anytime I get the opportunity to apply my skills to a situation where they might develop, it's nice to think I made a difference. 

What personal qualities do you have that helps you in your career?

Easy going attitude. 

What is your dream job?

John Oglesby, Deck Hand

Hopefully become the Skipper one day and be good at it.

Does your job allow you to have a lifestyle you are happy with?

Yes I get to see different countries fishing. 

What advice would you give to someone considering this job?

John Oglesby, Deck Hand

Try it out first for a trip and if you like it get whatever certs you need then. 

What are the three most important personal characteristics required for the job?

Good work ethic 
Able to work well with others 
Good attitude in general

What is your pet hate at work?

John Oglesby, Deck Hand

The washing down at the end of the season.

Have you undertaken, or do you plan to undertake any further training as part of your job?

John Oglesby, Deck Hand

I plan to finish my Second Hand Full (SHF) training and advance to Skipper Full with Cargo Endorsment.
