What were the main 'career decision' milestones in your life so far?

Laura Neill, Event and Engagement Manager

My passion for event management was solidified during my first major event. Despite the challenges of launching my career during the COVID-19 pandemic, I knew I had found the right industry. It was a tough time to be starting out, but I stuck with it, adapted quickly, and learned to stay calm under pressure. Looking back, I’m proud I pushed through and it confirmed that this is exactly where I’m meant to be.

How did you go about getting your current job?

My current role I found through LinkedIn job search and recommendations. I applied through the companies portal where I was invited for a first interview , followed by a second round shortly after. Being successful with the interviews I was then offered the role.

No two days are ever the same every event brings new challenges, clients, and creative opportunities. But what stays consistent is the need for strong organisation, attention to detail, and clear communication. Those core skills are at the heart of everything I do, no matter the size or type of event.

What are the main challenges?

One of the biggest challenges in event management is dealing with last-minute changes. Whether it’s a supplier issue, a venue problem, or a sudden shift in client expectations. These moments can be stressful, but they’ve taught me how to stay calm under pressure, think quickly, and adapt without compromising the quality of the event. Being prepared, staying organised, and having backup plans are key, and over time, I’ve learned to see these challenges as opportunities to grow and sharpen my skills. 

What do you like most?

What I love most about my career in event management is the variety of events I’ve had the chance to work on, whether big or small, each one is unique and enjoyable in its own way. Every event challenges me to use different skills, from creative planning to problem-solving under pressure. I also enjoy meeting a wide range of people along the way, clients, suppliers, attendees and occasionally even some well-known names. It keeps the job exciting and always full of new experiences.

What particular skills do you bring to your workplace?

I bring a strong mix of organisational skills, creativity, and calm under pressure. I’m highly detail-oriented, which is essential when managing multiple moving parts and tight deadlines. My communication skills help me work effectively with clients, suppliers, and teams, and I’m great at problem-solving especially when unexpected changes arise. I’m also adaptable, efficient, and always focused on delivering a smooth, memorable experience for everyone involved.

What subjects did you take in school and how have these influenced your career path?

I studied business in college because I wanted to build a strong foundation and broaden my knowledge across different areas. I always knew I wanted to work in events. The business degree gave me valuable insights into marketing, finance, and project management, all of which have been incredibly useful in my career as an event manager. It was a strategic choice that supported the path I knew I was passionate about.

I have a bachelors degree in Business studies. 

What aspects of your education have proven most important for your job?

Modules in marketing, project management, and finance have proven especially valuable. whether it’s budgeting for events, promoting them effectively, or keeping projects on track. It also helped me develop critical thinking, time management, and communication skills, which are all essential when managing complex events and working with different stakeholders.

What personal qualities do you have that helps you in your career?

I am extremely organised, highly detail-oriented, and self-motivated which are all qualities that are essential in event management. I take pride in noticing the small things that others might overlook, and I always plan ahead to make sure nothing is left to chance. Being naturally driven helps me stay on top of deadlines and deliver high-quality events, even under pressure. These traits allow me to create smooth, well-executed experiences that clients and guests can truly enjoy. 

Does your job allow you to have a lifestyle you are happy with?

One of the things I value most about working in event management is that, despite its fast pace and demanding moments, it allows me to maintain a healthy work-life balance. I enjoy the variety and structure it brings, which helps me stay focused at work while still making time for life outside of it.

What advice would you give to someone considering this job?

My biggest advice is to be prepared for a fast-paced, ever-changing environment where no two days are the same. Stay organised and pay close attention to detail as these skills will be your best friends. Also, be adaptable and ready to handle last-minute changes with a calm mindset. Networking is key, so build strong relationships with colleagues and clients. Finally, be passionate and patient as this industry can be challenging, but it’s incredibly rewarding when you see your hard work come to life.

In all my roles I have had since completed my degree I have had the opportunity to grow and further my learning. I have done courses in leadership, Microsoft skills , finance training and many more.

What kinds of work experience would provide a good background for this position?

Laura Neill, Event and Engagement Manager

When I was younger, I worked part-time as event staff behind the bar, on the floor, and helping out in various roles during events. Being part of the action sparked my interest in the industry, but it was watching what happened behind the scenes that really made me realise I wanted to be the one planning and managing events. That hands-on experience gave me a solid foundation and confirmed that event management was the right career path for me.
