Hi, Ask me a question...
What were the main 'career decision' milestones in your life so far?

Although I chose to do my undergraduate degree in Tourism Management, it wasn't a decision made out of a passion for the industry. I really didn't know how complex an industry it is, but since completing my undergraduate and post-graduate degrees it's certainly guided my career to date.
Who are the people who most influenced your career direction?

I don't know if there's anyone in particular that has influenced my career direction, but certainly there are lecturers from both my undergraduate and postgraduate, family members, and my current line manager that have been incredibly supportive of my personal and professional progression and growth, so I'm very grateful for that.
How did you go about getting your current job?

I interviewed for the role of Tourism & Events Administrator, I was interviewed by my current line manager and colleague within the Tourism & Events team, and I found out that I was successful and offered the position on the bus home after the interview! This was my first job after completing my masters, so I was very excited about it.
Describe a typical day?

Every day is slightly different based on what's happening in the cathedral, but the routine elements include checking-in with our Operations and front-desk team to discuss the day ahead. I'm based back-of-house in the main cathedral office so the key tasks include responding to emails, answering phone-calls, liaising with other departments/colleagues (operations, music, retail) to discuss upcoming events, financial admin including invoicing, marketing tasks such as schedule planning, updating the website etc. departmental meetings about long-term projects e.g. participation in Failte Ireland projects, upcoming sales events that we're attending etc. I always aim to divide my work into 'must-do' and 'to-do' to manage workload, deadlines, and stress. I work with wonderful colleagues that provide many moments throughout the day for chats and laughs!
What are the main challenges?

Working with a diverse range of stakeholders both internally and externally. My current role is not the same that I interviewed for or started back in 2018. While there are still similarities and consistencies, I can look back on my time to date and see where there has been growth, opportunities for new experiences, and challenges.
What do you like most?

I really like that as a result of working in the cathedral, and working to attract visitors to this architectural, cultural and historic space, that I am a part of its history and legacy.
What particular skills do you bring to your workplace?

I think I bring organisational and interpersonal skills, which I've developed and honed throughout my experience in the tourism and hospitality industry. I'm a positive, approachable and polite person which is important in a place that is not only a visitor attraction and heritage site but also a working place of worship, where everyone should feel welcome.
What subjects did you take in school and how have these influenced your career path?

I don't think any secondary school subjects were influential on my career, perhaps History to some extent. My undergraduate degree was in Tourism Management and I enjoyed learning about tourism policy and planning and I see the importance and presence of that in my current role by working with the likes of Failte Ireland, Dublin City Council etc.
What is your education to date?

After secondary school I did an undergraduate and masters in Tourism Management. I completed a post-graduate in Workplace Wellbeing, and I'm also a registered Yoga teacher - the latter has contributed to personal growth and development that I think has positive impacts on my professional life.
What aspects of your education have proven most important for your job?

Tourism Destination/Policy and Planning have been important to understand the bigger picture and context of how tourism operates in a destination (Dublin) and who are the key stakeholders, how do they interact etc. without that knowledge and awareness I think that tourism doesn't mean anything more to people than a holiday outside of Ireland.
What have been the most rewarding events in your career so far?

Representing my workplace at domestic and international sales trip, expanding my skillset to digital marketing, incorporating the importance of workplace wellbeing.
What personal qualities do you have that helps you in your career?

I'm approachable, social, organised, efficient and detail oriented.
Does your job allow you to have a lifestyle you are happy with?

I work 9-5, Mon-Fri and that pattern of work suits me personally. I have experience in shift work but it's not my preference as I don't feel that it would support my lifestyle now. While I would be in favour of a more hybrid work styles, I understand that the nature of the industry is 24/7 and this is not always possible.
What advice would you give to someone considering this job?

I think they'd need to be a team player, open to stepping outside of their comfort zone and immediate remit on occasion, and be able to manage stress at times. An education/background in the industry is a bonus but a lot can be learned by doing the job and working closely with key stakeholders through events, online training, ups killing etc.
What are the three most important personal characteristics required for the job?

Flexibility, patience, friendliness.
Have you undertaken, or do you plan to undertake any further training as part of your job?

I don't have anything in mind right now, but I am open to the possibility of further study or continued professional development. I think everyone should be.
What kinds of work experience would provide a good background for this position?

Customer service/front-facing positions in any industry. Office based experience in administrative tasks. Sales and marketing experience also.
