Parents

This section will help parents and guardians to understand the basics of Career Guidance and how it can work for your child. Navigate the menu system below for everything you need to help support them with their education and career decisions and also what additional supports are available.

What is Career Guidance?

It is useful to understand some of the basic principles of Career Guidance and the processes involved in planning and building a successful career. Once you have familiarised yourself with these concepts, you can harness them as you support and guide your child on their career and life journey.

In the Parents area we:

  • Outline the main principles, influences and processes at work on your child's career journey
  • Provide useful tips on how you can help along the way
  • Indicate school activities that support each stage of the process

For a detailed discussion on the main areas of concern expressed by parents, follow our extensive guide by using the buttons at the top of this page.

Supporting Your Child

Children and teenagers absorb so much of what they see, hear and experience as they grow up. It is important to understand that the example parents set and the values that they show to family, friends and society are often adopted by their child. Likewise, the amount of interest shown and the (healthy) expectations that parents have for their child’s education and career are also key influencers in preparing them for a rewarding career. Other factors that a parent should consider to help their child towards a fulfilling career are:

  • Encourage them to get the best education/training as possible. Try to foster good decision making skills and help them to become skills-oriented
  • Strengthen both their level of self-understanding and their knowledge about the world of work by making them aware of all the resources within Careers Portal
  • Encourage your child to understand the value of being a responsible, respectful citizen. In today’s modern, globalised world it is vital that we value both cultural diversity and gender equality
