The All Ireland Scholarships was first proposed by JP McManus when he expressed a strong desire to provide funds for the establishment of a third level education scholarship scheme covering the thirty-two counties of Ireland. He stated that the Celtic Tiger will not be around forever and that education will be the key for success in more difficult times. He was also conscious of the cross border dimensions of the proposed scholarship programme and stated that the All Ireland Scholarships scheme should operate on a similar basis North and South.
The All Ireland Scholarships Programme commenced during 2008. The value of each scholarship is set at €6,750 per annum in Ireland and stg£5,500 per annum in Northern Ireland and will continue for the duration of the undergraduate programmes chosen by the scholarship winners. Participation in the scholarship scheme is confined to those who are exempt from paying the Leaving Certificate Examination fee in Ireland or are in receipt of the Educational Maintenance Allowance in Northern Ireland, and the scholarships are awarded on the basis of the results of a candidate’s first attempt at the final secondary education examinations in Ireland or Northern Ireland. The Stuart Mangan scholarship has been established to honour the life and memory of this young athlete by making it possible for those who suffered paralysis while competing in sport to participate in educational programmes at the University of Limerick for periods of up to four years. The purpose of Scholarship is to focus on candidates who may lack the financial resources to attend university and for whom the lack of such resources represents an apparently insurmountable obstacle. The scholarship will provide funding grants of up to €25,000 per annum to address the obstacles which may be preventing a paralysed sportsperson from fulfilling their educational potential. The UL University of Sanctuary Scholarship provides tuition fee waivers (ie, no fees) to first-time higher education applicants who identify as a refugee, asylum seeker or a person in a refugee-like situation as defined by the UNHCR 1951 Refugee Convention and who have made an application for International Protection.

Love Actually Charity (LAC) is a Dublin based charity dedicated to empowering children with special educational needs (SEN) through inclusive programs, online resources, and community support.  Building on this legacy, the charity is now extending its impact to support older students as they navigate further education by continuing to address barriers to learning and development. As part of this evolving mission, we are delighted to share that LAC have generously established three new scholarships at the University of Limerick – valued at €1,000 each – beginning in Academic Year 2025/26.  These awards are available to undergraduate students from any year who are registered with the UL Disability Support Service (DSS), reflecting the charity’s growing commitment to inclusive support across all stages of education.

The scholarships are open to all current, full time, UL students or those who are applying to come to UL for the first time either through CAO or transferring at undergraduate or postgraduate level. Applicants must be a member of a national governing body of sport recognised by the Irish Sports Council, in the sport in which they are applying for a scholarship.
