Chinese Language & Culture

(Short Course)
Brief Description
This short course in Chinese Language and Culture is for the non-native speaker. It introduces you to the language and culture of China. Approximately 70% of the course is focused on language and 30% on culture. 

It provides you with a learning base in Mandarin Chinese on which you can build in the future. You will also learn about China and understand and experience many aspects of Chinese culture which are essential to communicating effectively in Chinese.

This is an optional Junior Cycle short course and requires approximately 100 hours of learning
How will Chinese Language & Culture be useful to me?

A growing number of young people are interested in learning Chinese and discovering the culture and way of life of Chinese people. 
There are four strands to this new Junior Cycle programme:

  • Myself, My Family and Friends - You will learn to communicate about yourslef in personal settings.  
  • Out and About in Public Places - You will acquire the language skills to participate in different public situations.
  • Education and School - You will develop the skills to communicate with teachers and peers in school/out-of-school settings.
  • Chinese and Young Global Citizens - You will learn about, and develop the language skills to talk about Chinese people, both in China and around the world, and their connections with other cultures and peoples.
Mandarin Chinese is the world’s most-spoken language, with one billion native speakers. Ireland now exports goods and services to China worth billions annually. These strong economic links mean that there are excellent career opportunities in the future for speakers of Mandarin Chinese.
