Science and maths teachers work to develop their pupils’ understanding of the world around them and to educate future generations of scientists, engineers and technologists, not to mention citizens who are scientifically, mathematically and technically literate.

You’ll build a strong foundation in key areas of education, mathematics and either physics or chemistry, developing essential mathematical thinking skills, and scientific practices and ways of working throughout the four years. You’ll also study the history, psychology, sociology and philosophy of education, as well as undertaking curriculum studies.

Our Science Education degree involves the study of both science and education over a four-year period after which you will be a fully qualified science teacher. UCC’s Science Education programme is an example of the concurrent model of teacher training which means that you study both science and education over the duration of the programme.

Graduates of this Science Teaching programme are qualified to teach the following subjects in all Irish second level schools.

In this Nanoscience course you will learn about the study of very small-things on a nanometer scale (one thousandth millionth of a metre). This is the scale of large molecules like plastics or proteins.

Nanotechnology includes the techniques used to create structures on a scale below 100 nm, which can be used in new generations of electronics, sensors and computer chips.

The UCD Science (DN200) course offers 27 degree subjects categorised into streams. Students can study subjects from more than one stream in first year. It is also possible for students to change their stream in first year.

This one year course leading to a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Security Studies is designed to prepare students for employment in the security industry. Students will be encouraged to sit entrance exams for the Garda, Prison Service and Defence Forces. The security studies award is a valuable addition to those who are preparing to join An Garda Sochna, The Defence Forces or the Prison Service. It will also benefit those seeking to set up their own security business or work in the business.

This course provides students with the opportunity to build a visual portfolio in the areas of drama film and factual video production, photography, and television studio work. Students will also learn about and experience the many creative roles available in these areas. Students will acquire practical skills in single and multi-camera shooting, photography, and film & video editing, using professional standard equipment. These skills will be evidenced in a portfolio of work including a short film, factual video, scripts, and photography.
