The Maynooth University Certificate in Science/Computer Science is a Level 6 Foundation Programme for mature students (aged 21 years or over by 1st January 2021) who wish to undertake a foundation year in preparation for degree studies in the Science and Engineering areas, or in the area of Computer Science. Students enrolling on this one-year, full-time Programme can opt for either the Science strand or the Computer Science strand. There are a maximum of 25 places on the course each year, and students benefit from the collegial and supportive learning environment provided by this group.

Under the Science strand, students undertake modules in Mathematics, Engineering Science, Computer Science, Experimental Physics, Mathematical Physics, Biology and Chemistry.

Under the Computer Science strand, students undertake modules in Computer Science, Mathematics, Experimental Physics, Mathematical Physics and Electronic Engineering.

This course provides training for learners who wish to follow a career in Science. Through this course you can develop skills and competencies in the preparation, use and maintenance of laboratory equipment to perform a range of laboratory procedures.

This course provides an introduction to the world of science and covers a variety of subjects related to laboratory and physical sciences. It is suitable for learners who wish to train for employment as a laboratory assistant. The course will also equip learners with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to access science based programmes in third level institutions.

You’ll build a strong foundation in key areas of education, mathematics and either physics or chemistry, developing essential mathematical thinking skills, and scientific practices and ways of working throughout the four years. Our Science Education degree involves the study of both science and education over a four-year period after which you will be a fully qualified science teacher. UCC’s Science Education programme is an example of the concurrent model of teacher training which means that you study both science and education over the duration of the programme.

Graduates of this Science Teaching programme are qualified to teach the following subjects in all Irish second level schools.

The programme is designed to produce a graduate who is highly educated and capable both academically and professionally, and who will be prepared to meet the challenges involved in teaching the physical sciences.

In this Nanoscience course you will learn about the study of very small-things on a nanometer scale (one thousandth millionth of a metre). This is the scale of large molecules like plastics or proteins.

Nanotechnology includes the techniques used to create structures on a scale below 100 nm, which can be used in new generations of electronics, sensors and computer chips.

The UCD Science (DN200) course offers 27 degree subjects categorised into streams. Students can study subjects from more than one stream in first year. It is also possible for students to change their stream in first year.

At the end of first year, students choose a minimum of two subjects to study in second year (for example Statistics and Mathematics or Genetics and Microbiology). Students will major in one of these subjects in third and fourth year.

This one year course leading to a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Security Studies is designed to prepare students for employment in the security industry. Students will be encouraged to sit entrance exams for the Garda, Prison Service and Defence Forces. The security studies award is a valuable addition to those who are preparing to join An Garda Sochna, The Defence Forces or the Prison Service. The programme aims to provide the film, television and wider creative industry alongside music and cultural festival promoters with set design and construction professionals, equipped with a clear understanding of the present and future needs of the industry.

Graduates will have a clear sense of set design and construction knowhow, ensuring that they will be equipped with the attributes to keep pace with the fast and ever-changing technological advancements in the sector.

This course provides students with the opportunity to build a visual portfolio in the areas of drama film and factual video production, photography, and television studio work. Students will also learn about and experience the many creative roles available in these areas. Students will acquire practical skills in single and multi-camera shooting, photography, and film & video editing, using professional standard equipment. These skills will be evidenced in a portfolio of work including a short film, factual video, scripts, and photography.
