Students undertaking English and History explore literature, language and history in the widest possible sense. From the earliest writings in Anglo-Saxon to contemporary Irish, British, and ‘global’ literatures; from the origins of ancient Greece and Rome to modern Irish, European, American and Chinese history, students study English in its linguistic, historical and ideological circumstances and in History can choose modules that focus on gender, social and cultural history, colonial history, politics, religious and economic change.

The B.A. (Honours) in English and History is a 4 Year Level 8 Programme. It offers students the opportunity to read the greatest works of literature in English alongside the most important and influential events in Irish, European and world history.

Students on this programme develop a deep knowledge of literature in English and history, and more generally, advanced understandings of human society and culture at the local, regional and global level.

The structure of the programme gives students a solid foundation in both English literature and History in Years 1 and 2, before allowing them to specialise in either English or History, or to keep a balance between the subjects in Years 3 and 4.

English Literature covers a broad range of literatures written in the English language, from Chaucer to the present day. The aim of the course is to help students acquire a thorough knowledge of the history of differing literatures while also enabling them to develop a sophisticated critical consciousness and an awareness of critical and cultural theory.

Studying two languages at Trinity will enable you to develop your skills to a level where you can communicate confidently and competently on virtually any subject and in every situation. You will gain deeper familiarity through the study of their literature, culture, history and politics, and you will gain competencies in understanding and successfully navigating cultural differences.

Students combine this subject with their choice of French, German, Irish, Russian or Spanish.
