This course gives students the opportunity to study common science topics for the first 2 years before specialising into an Award option stream in Years 3 and 4; Biopharmaceutical Science or Environmental Bioscience.

Science (Common Entry) was designed as a common entry course for the student who has a keen interest in science, but is unsure of which area they would like to specialise in. This course gives the student a flavour of a variety of different scientific disciplines, allowing them to keep their options open when applying to study science at third level.

When you apply for Science you must select ONE of the following options:

• Common Entry SE500
• Biosciences with Biopharmaceuticals SE500
• Brewing and Distilling SE500
• Pharmaceutics and Drug Formulation SE500

Applicants who select a specific degree option are guaranteed a place on that programme subject to meeting the entry requirements and points. Applicants who are undecided on choices should choose Common Entry. All applicants may change their selection up to the end of Year 1 and must confirm their specialism at that point.

The main aim of this course is to produce graduates with the skills they need to work as technicians/technologists or scientific personnel in the fields of biosciences, chemistry and physics.

Science is the process of understanding the world around us and underpins many of the major industrial sectors and employers in Ireland, for example, Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Healthcare, Agri-Food and the Green Economy. 

This General Science course is ideal if you are not yet sure which Science discipline you wish to pursue and you are looking for a broad education in first year that will allow the maximum possible choice in future years.

The modules of this course offer an introduction to biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and computing. Elective modules are also offered in specialised areas such as Food Science with Business, Pharmaceutical Science, and Molecular Biology with Biopharmaceutical Science.

The student can get a taste of what is involved in each of these areas, before making a more informed choice as to which area they would like to specialise in for their degree.

This programme is an general entry science programme that gives students an exceptional level of flexibility. The programme builds a core foundation in key science disciplines in Year 1. Our science programmes are hands-on, with a big emphasis on developing practical skills. This means our students graduate with the skills employers want. Students spend 50% of their time in labs and have access to state-of-the-art, industry-spec equipment. As an undergraduate, you will study a four-year Science degree, while also completing 60 credits in Education. After four years you are awarded a BSc Science (with Education) degree – a level 8 honours degree.

The Higher Certificate in Science provides students with a grounding in scientific knowledge and skills. There is an emphasis on practical skills and with more than 50% of the course dedicated to practical classes, students gain essential laboratory and analytical skills.

The course is designed to provide graduates with theoretical knowledge and understanding, and the practical skills necessary to pursue technical careers in a modern scientific environment in the areas of industrial chemistry, pharmaceutical manufacture, scientific instrumentation, quality control, food science and technology.

The UCD Science (DN200) course offers 27 degree subjects categorised into streams. Students can study subjects from more than one stream in first year. It is also possible for students to change their stream in first year.

At the end of first year, students choose a minimum of two subjects to study in second year (for example Statistics and Mathematics or Genetics and Microbiology). Students will major in one of these subjects in third and fourth year.

This course is best suited to inquisitive students who like to discover how things work and who enjoy Biology and have an interest in subjects like Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Ecology. Students will explore the fundamentals of modern biology that underpin the production of drugs, medical products and the control of pollution, allowing them to shape the world around them.

This three year course will give you the opportunity to discover which area of science - Bioanalytical Science, Food Science & Nutrition or Pharmaceutical & Medicinal Science. This is a good choice for anyone who know they want to study science but are unsure about which specific area you want to specialize in. After one year you’ll be able to make your choice, furthering your study and opening up numerous career opportunities including becoming a Biology teacher, Quality Manager or Biopharmaceutical Scientist, in the areas of Biopharmaceuticals, the Environmental sector and Education.

Students are given advice during the year to help guide their decisions. Throughout this course students develop an understanding of the physicochemical and biological principles that underpin the design, function, synthesis, analysis and delivery of pharmaceutical substances. The Maynooth University Certificate in Science/Computer Science is a Level 6 Foundation Programme for mature students (aged 21 years or over by 1st January 2021) who wish to undertake a foundation year in preparation for degree studies in the Science and Engineering areas, or in the area of Computer Science. Students enrolling on this one-year, full-time Programme can opt for either the Science strand or the Computer Science strand. There are a maximum of 25 places on the course each year, and students benefit from the collegial and supportive learning environment provided by this group.

Under the Science strand, students undertake modules in Mathematics, Engineering Science, Computer Science, Experimental Physics, Mathematical Physics, Biology and Chemistry.

Under the Computer Science strand, students undertake modules in Computer Science, Mathematics, Experimental Physics, Mathematical Physics and Electronic Engineering.

This course provides training for learners who wish to follow a career in Science. Through this course you can develop skills and competencies in the preparation, use and maintenance of laboratory equipment to perform a range of laboratory procedures.

This course provides an introduction to the world of science and covers a variety of subjects related to laboratory and physical sciences. It is suitable for learners who wish to train for employment as a laboratory assistant. The course will also equip learners with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to access science based programmes in third level institutions.

Science and maths teachers work to develop their pupils’ understanding of the world around them and to educate future generations of scientists, engineers and technologists, not to mention citizens who are scientifically, mathematically and technically literate.

You’ll build a strong foundation in key areas of education, mathematics and either physics or chemistry, developing essential mathematical thinking skills, and scientific practices and ways of working throughout the four years. You’ll also study the history, psychology, sociology and philosophy of education, as well as undertaking curriculum studies.
