Biomedical Engineering combines the design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to help improve patient health care and the quality of life of individuals.

This course integrates the study of biological systems, biomedical devices and clinical engineering with traditional mechanical, electrical and manufacturing engineering. Projects are carried out in conjunction with industry, with medical practitioners, and with the Biomedical Engineering unit of Cork University Hospital.

When you study Biomedical Engineering, you not only learn how the body works and becomes injured, but you come to understand how medical devices are developed to treat injuries and disease, and how we can help the body heal itself.

As many as 18 of the world’s top 25 medical technology companies have a base in Ireland, and 50% of the 400 MedTech companies based here are indigenous. Graduates of this degree in Biomedical Engineering will have the appropriate skillsets to serve this requirement. BSc Hons Biomedical Science with Diploma in Professional Practice (DPP)/Diploma in International Academic Studies (DIAS) 4 years full-time. In order to attain the DPP students normally undertake a placement in either industry or a research institute. To attain the DIAS students undertake a period of studies overseas at another educational institution.

Biopharmaceutical Chemistry is a multidisciplinary subject that combines areas of chemistry and biology. The Biopharmaceutical Chemistry course has a relatively small intake of students and includes ample opportunity for research within projects in years 2 and 4, and a 20-26 week work placement in Year 3.

This Special Purpose Award in Biopharmaceutical Supply Chain Management is designed to broaden and deepen the knowledge and skill base of graduates of a Level 7 degree in Supply Chain Management or in Business and Engineering disciplines who already have experience of Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Supply Chain graduates have shown particular interest in enhancing their knowledge of issues such as the strategic management, transport planning, customs management, and global logistics and supply chain management in the Biopharmaceutical and Pharmaceutical industry sectors.

This one-year programme is an industrially focused Level 8 programme where students gain valuable knowledge and skills in key subject area, which are pertinent to working in highly regulated and automated manufacturing and distribution environments such as GMP, QA, QC, Lean Manufacturing, Operations Management, Lean Supply Chains.
