This course will introduce you to the fascinating world of the biological sciences. You’ll study a range of science subjects, including Microbiology, Biochemistry and Drug Delivery. The food and drink industry in Ireland is a very important indigenous industry, providing interesting and well paid employment. Consumers require attractive, convenient and safe food products that also offer health promoting benefits and skilled scientists are required to manufacture and develop these products.

Skills and knowledge in areas such as science and technology, food safety and nutrition are the focus of this course. Throughout the course you will gain insights into the manufacture and the nutritional content of current food products, and how to develop new exciting innovative products.

Applied Biosciences is the study of complex biological systems, and how they work, for example how bacteria generate energy from the breakdown of sugars. Applied Biosciences also involves the use of living organisms and bioprocesses in engineering, technology, medicine and agriculture – in other words, the application of scientific and technical advances in the life sciences to develop commercial products.

This level 8 programme is designed to give the graduate experience with a wide range of modern computing skills. Students will learn cutting edge programming techniques, data analytics, UX design, web architecture plus many other skills. Students can practice honing core computational and problem solving skills needed for any 21st Century technology driven society, in a vibrant and modern campus. 

This exciting new course is designed to examine the impact of issues such as climate change and global habitat degradation, with a view to providing a grounding in future-proof, sustainable environmental practices. You will acquire a broad base of knowledge in ecological sustainability, conservation and biodiversity, including theoretical concepts and best practices relating to ecosystems. You will learn:

• How to examine plant and animal characteristics in the environment
• How to measure and report on land and water pollution
• How environmentally-sound landscape management can alleviate the issues associated with modern urban and rural development.

Successful completion of this course will result in a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Applied Ecology

Economics is the study of people in the ordinary business of life. It is about the choices and decisions that we make and the consequence of these decisions. The BSc Applied Economics is a degree in Economics with a difference. It is a 4 year degree combining the study and application of Economics with personal, professional development and the opportunity to go on work placement or study abroad.

You will study a range of modules from Marine Biology research at home and abroad (e.g. Spain or Portugal) to Environmental Management and Biodiversity / Conservation. You will be studying an exciting mix of subjects including Marine Biology, studies of rivers and lakes, ecology and zoology.

Year one involves the study of a range of Science modules and year two focuses on Biology - the science of life. Biologists explore and learn how organisms are constructed and how they function. This involves the study of reproduction, growth and development and how organisms capture and use raw materials and energy. Year three covers areas such as fisheries, pollution control, the environment and aquatic biology where the main activity entails the monitoring of the aquatic environment.

The BA in Applied Language and Translation Studies (ALTS) is a unique degree that aims to prepare a new generation of translators and language professionals for global career opportunities. You will study two foreign languages with exciting combinations that include Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. Plus this dynamic degree allows you to explore the principles behind language, culture, translation and intercultural communication.

You’ll learn through a blend of lectures, tutorials and a strong element of laboratory and project work, gaining theoretical and analytical knowledge as well as excellent hands-on experimental, problem-solving and analytical skills. And you can focus on your core interests, by choosing from a range of specialisms such as data science, computational physics or semiconductors.

Gaining vital real-world experience
In third year, you’ll do an INTRA work placement, either in an industrial or research laboratory environment. We strongly support students applying for summer internships both nationally and internationally, and some Applied Physics students go on such competitive internships each year, both in Ireland and abroad.
