History of Art and Architecture

History of Art and Architecture is about the study of images, objects and buildings. It is unique in developing high levels of visual literacy applicable to a range of career pathways. It explores why works of art look the way they do and seeks to discover what they say about the societies that created them. It develops skills in visual analysis, critical assessment, and communication.

The study of Classical Languages is concerned with the language, literature and thought of either Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome. You will choose to study either Greek or Latin. Through the reading of literature in the original language and the examination of key aspects of ancient history, you will develop a thorough knowledge of the classical world and a critical approach to textual and material culture.

Students combine this subject with their choice of French or German.

Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology (CLAHA) is an integrated degree programme that allows you to study the history, literature, art, archaeology, culture and thought of the ancient world in conjunction with one or both of the ancient languages.

You will study Classics, Art History and Archaeology in great detail. This is a one year specialist course training students to work as Special Needs Assistants (SNAs) in Pre school, Primary and Secondary School Classrooms. Primary and Secondary Schools as well as specialist schools employ Special Needs Assistants to work in a variety of educational settings.

In this course (which is unique in the country), you’ll learn how to measure and image the physiological activity of the human body and provide diagnostic information to medical staff.

As well as learning through traditional lectures, you’ll gain extensive practical experience, including placement in a hospital. It’s not necessary to have studied physics before entry.

The aim of this programme is to allow students to gain the required qualification, skills and competencies to enter the healthcare work force as a Clinical Measurement Physiologist. These healthcare professionals perform diagnostics tests for patients, reporting and acting on the outcomes and being part of the interdisciplinary team treating patients. This degree was developed in collaboration with the professional body for Clinical Measurement Physiologists, the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Physiology.

The ability to speak and write, to listen and learn, to be understood — abilities that are fundamental to human communication and interaction — can be impaired by a wide range of conditions, from stroke to cerebral palsy, hearing impairment, learning disabilities, developmental delays, and autism. Speech and Language Therapists work with people of all ages and assess, diagnose and treat individuals with a variety of communication and swallowing disorders. 

The aim of this minor Award is to provide participants with a basis on which to develop their therapeutic understanding of the theoretical and clinical considerations of substance use. The objectives of the module include increasing knowledge of Substance Use issues to include pharmacology, aetiology, and interventions appropriate to this clinical cohort.

This Cloud Computing course is designed to introduce students to the Cloud Computing discipline. Students become familiar with the fundamentals of software programming in languages which are Cloud standards. Networking, computer hardware and operating systems are also presented with an emphasis on how they relate to the cloud. Key modules in Virtualisation Support and Distributed Systems are also studied.

On completion successful students may progress to Cloud Computing Level 6, other education opportunities or to the labour market.

The aim of this course is to provide the learner with the skills, knowledge and competencies to enable him/her to pursue a career in the field of Cloud Computing. Learners will gain skills in virtualisation, specifically focusing on VMware’s technologies, as well as distributed systems which are the key areas of Cloud Computing. Areas of study will also include software design and development in addition to web design and development.

Development supports and progression strategies are provided to develop the learner’s personal effectiveness and job seeking skills so as to maximise employment potential and capacity to compete in the labour market.

The Coaching and Sports Performance programme aims to develop, from evidence- based theory and practice, the students’ ability to lead physical activity, to coach athletes (individually and in teams), and manage sports teams and individual athletes.

Graduates will also have the knowledge, skills, competence and first-hand experience to design and lead strength and conditioning programmes and to design and lead performance training programmes.

The programme focuses on key theories with applied research and practical skills in these core domains to provide graduates with the relevant knowledge, skills and competences to work as professionals in a wide range of sports coaching, athletic development, and health and wellbeing settings.

The option of a comprehensive sports internship programme that provides not just breadth, but also significant depth, in the operational machinations of the ‘coaching science and sports performance’ industry in Ireland and/ or abroad, is an integral component of this programme.

Coastal Guiding, is aimed at people who are passionate about their environment and exploring its coastal landscape, heritage, culture and ecology with an enthusiasm for getting outdoors and sharing this with others.

As part of the course, students visit heritage, cultural, ecological and archeological sites in other parts of County Mayo and beyond for field trips, training and guiding opportunities.
