This course blends language learning and initial teacher education to prepare you to work as a language teacher in post-primary schools in the Irish education system. You can choose to study two languages from modern languages (French, Spanish, German or Italian) and/or an Ghaeilge. Alternatively, you can choose to major in an Ghaeilge alone.

You will engage in modules to develop your language proficiency skills, building your linguistic competencies while also learning about the culture and literature of the language(s) through an interrogation of key texts.

You will also develop your skills as a teacher as you progress through the course, undertaking modules in foundation disciplines (history/sociology/psychology/philosophy of education, curriculum studies) and professional studies (communication skills, digital learning, research) while also engaging in school placement (in both primary and post-primary schools).

Teachers of Irish are now in high demand in secondary schools, both in English-speaking schools and also in Gaelcholáistí. Our BEd degree enables students to qualify as teachers of Irish in combination with a second subject through a 4-year undergraduate teaching degree. The second subjects offered in this degree are French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Mathematical Studies.

The Bachelor of Education is a four-year, full-time, honours degree (Level 8) designed to qualify students to teach in primary schools. Accredited by the Teaching Council, it seeks to equip participants with the competence to teach at all levels of the primary school.

You will take Education modules and a school-based placement across all four years of this professional teaching degree, as well as a placement in the Gaeltacht for two fortnight blocks in years two and three of the degree.

As a student on the programme you will study many of the same modules as your colleagues on the Bachelor of Education. In Year 3, semester 5, you will spend the semester studying abroad.

Not only will you explore teaching methodologies in a different context but the semester will also allow you to experience and understand the education system and policies of another country. On returning from your study abroad you will take education specialisation modules in Comparative Education.

The BA in Education and Design or Education and Fine Art is a Joint Honours award. That means you follow the full degree course in Fine Art or Design as well as taking a dedicated teacher education programme as a professional qualification. This Joint Honours course takes four years to complete, as compared to the three-year single discipline Fine Art or Design degree.

The B Ed in Education and Psychology is a unique four-year, full-time, double-honours (level 8) degree programme in Education and Psychology. The programme prepares graduates to be primary teachers, as accredited by the Teaching Council of Ireland, and obtain a degree in Psychology, as accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland.

The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (BECE) prepares you for work as a professional in a variety of early childhood educational settings, from preschools and creches, to child and family support programmes and it equips graduates to work with children of all needs. The BECE enables graduates to follow a career in a range of voluntary and statutory organisations that work on behalf of children and families.

During the programme you will learn about adult, adolescent and early childhood education through attendance at classes, hands on learning, reading and skill development.

The modules delivered on the programme encompass the themes of life-long learning, ethics and social justice, education and culture, and education policies and practices. The modules cover technology, the arts, curriculum and programme design, policy analysis and much more.

This programme places great emphasis on teaching and research. Graduates are qualified to teach Business Studies and Accounting to honours Leaving Certificate level.

The Dissertation can be in either Education or a Subject discipline. Students begin the preparation for the dissertation in Year 3 where they undertake their research methods module.

The degree programme includes four years of modules in Irish and Religious Studies. These are taken concurrently with education modules which include theoretical, pedagogical and professional studies along with a number of school placement experiences.

The Teaching Council requires Irish language teachers to have spent a minimum of three months on residential placement in a designated Gaeltacht area prior to registering with it.

The Bachelor of Education in Home Economics is a four-year, concurrent level eight degree, university accredited and recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland. This professional qualification is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and beliefs necessary for teaching Home Economics to the highest level in the post-primary sector. The study of education is undertaken concurrently with study in the subject discipline Home Economics in each of the four years of the programme. School placement is a key feature of the programme and students undertake a school-based placement each year.

The Bachelor of Education in Home Economics and Biology is a full-time, concurrent teacher education degree leading to a National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) Level 8 honours degree.
