The Physical Sciences (Common Entry) course is designed for applicants who wish to enter a physical science course in MTU but are undecided about or wish to postpone selecting a designated chemistry or physics qualification until after they have had an opportunity to experience both disciplines.

Common Semester 1: The common semester 1 programme includes modules in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and Computing so that students will have completed an introduction to general science by the end of semester 1. At the end of semester 1, students choose the chemistry or physics degree course that they wish to pursue in semester 2.

Physics is the fundamental science, which seeks to understand the basic laws governing the structure of matter, the nature of energy and the physical forces that form our world. Its span of interest ranges from the nature of the short-range forces which operate inside the atomic nucleus to the origin and structure of the universe.

The aim of this programme is to satisfy those who have an interest in fundamental science, to find rewarding careers in the applications of physics to measurement science and technology. Non-destructive testing is a specialisation of the course, this is the science of testing materials and systems without dismantling or damage, utilising X-rays, ultrasound, scanning electron microscopes, etc.

There is a high emphasis on practical work and projects - the student completes a number of projects over the course of the programme, and these can range from building electronic guitars, to making heart monitors, to finding new ways to use electron microscopy. 

Widely considered the most fundamental science, the world of physics continues to enlighten and astound with its mind-blowing discoveries, and physicists have pioneered modern technologies as diverse as the Internet, nuclear power and MRI scanners.

In first year, you’ll gain a solid foundation in classical and modern physics, mathematics and computing, and invaluable laboratory exposure, before choosing the degree specialism you want to pursue: BSc in Applied Physics; BSc in Physics with Astronomy; BSc in Physics with Biomedical Sciences or the BSc in Physics with Data Analytics.

This course is designed to educate and train students to be professional scientists in the area of Physics Technology, and to provide them with scientific and analytical skills in physics as well as a practical problem-solving ability.

Astronomy is the oldest of the sciences, but you’ll discover how it’s evolving incredibly quickly in the 21st century, with more and more sensitive instruments yielding more and better data.

Astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects (stars, planets, comets, asteroids) and phenomena (cosmic radiation, dark energy). This course provides a solid grounding in physics and astrophysics, as well as planetary science, astronomy, astronomical instrumentation and techniques, and cosmology.

In the Physics of Medical Devices module, you’ll gain insights into the medical device industry, from the initial concept of a medical device to its manufacture. In the Diagnostic Imaging module, you’ll gain an understanding of the principles of how an image is formed using x-rays or sound waves, and be able to critically assess the important design features in such imaging devices for optimum image quality. 

This course equips students with the skills to manage the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injured individuals by offering a unique blend of academic theory, practical workshops and clinical placements in the final year. The Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy is a four-year degree programme which includes a total of 31 weeks of clinical practice in the last two years of the programme. The first year provides a foundation in Anatomy and Physiology, communication and behaviour, and an Introduction to Physiotherapy Practice. Over the remaining three years you will undertake studies in the various disciplines of physiotherapy including cardiorespiratory care, clinical neurology and musculoskeletal disorders for people across the lifespan. It involves treating patients of all ages with a range of illnesses and conditions, including those with back and neck problems, sports injuries, arthritis, or those recovering from strokes and operations. The focus of our treatment is exercise prescription. 

Chevron College is currently accepting registration of interest for a new 3-year Undergraduate Bachelor of Science (BSc.) Physiotherapy Degree which is being run in partnership with the University of East London.

Chevron College have a vision to educate highly-skilled Physiotherapists who will consistently provide critically appraised, evidence-informed, and compassionate care to patients in diverse health environments.

Successful completion of this course will result in a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Physiotherapy Assistant 5M3782.

This course is aimed at students interested in pursuing a career in Physiotherapy. Students who undertake this one year course in Physiotherapy will gain an understanding of the principles and practices of rehabilitation and the treatment of injured, ill or disabled patients, through various therapeutic techniques, such as, exercise, massage and taping. Students will develop an understanding of the human body and impaired mobility and its impact on human performance. They will gain an insight into various clinical settings and the implementation of client care and patient handling.

Students will gain the skills needed by the HSE to work in the healthcare sector, which will help them to understand therapy programmes and support clients in restoring or improving their mobility and overall function.
