Our biological science degree in Animal Bioscience has a major focus on animal health, disease and diagnostics. The animal biosciences discipline is experiencing significant growth, both nationally and internationally, due to an increased demand for diagnostics to underpin animal health and disease management globally.

UCD’s Animal Science programme is a four-year degree that delves into the applied sciences necessary for understanding how animals function and the principles of livestock production. You will explore the growth, development, and behaviour of domestic animals, and the fundamentals of sustainable animal production systems. Modules include animal biology, genetics, biotechnology, nutrition, and more.

Animal Science – Equine allows those with a passion for horses, the equine industry or equine science to pursue these interests at third level and still maintain a broad range of future career options within agriculture. A highlight of the degree is the opportunity to participate in a 5-month international work placement within a leading Thoroughbred or Sport Horse organisation. The degree provides the scientific knowledge and transferable skills necessary for professional leadership roles within many aspects of the Agriculture and Equine industries.

This is a creative animation programme offering a broad range of skills designed to enable you to operate independently within the commercial environment after graduation. The contemporary animation industry requires creative thinkers who can operate flexibly within different aspects of animation production.

Applications to this programme were previously made through AU330 BA (Hons) in Design (Common Entry), which is now closed for application. Applicants can now apply directly to each speciality stream and still enjoy the benefits of a common entry start.

The three-year BA (Hons) in Animation and Games Design is aimed at those who wish to secure employment in the Games and/or Animation industry, and those who wish to design and produce their own animated films or video games. The Animation and Game Design programme has been delivered since 2016 as a major pathway on the BA (Hons) in Design. It has been very successful, with excellent feedback from the students, graduates and industry.

Students must choose a stream at the end of Year 1.

Graduates of the BA in Animation and Illustration will have the capacity to apply their knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of illustration and principles of animation to a broad range of areas within the animation and illustration practice.

Students develop the capacity for independent learning as well as producing work collaboratively. Solid analytical and IT-related skills, as well as critical reasoning through the twin emphasis of both animation and illustration, are vital to creating strong, visually appealing and imaginative artwork.

There are modules on drawing/character development, illustration, design, character modelling, animation principles, and much more.

This programme will prepare graduates for employment in the extensive pharmaceutical, biomedical and healthcare sectors in Ireland. Many opportunities also exist in the area of environmental protection, food quality and safety, the regulatory agencies and research. Applied Biosciences is the study of complex biological systems, and how they work, for example how bacteria generate energy from the breakdown of sugars. Applied Biosciences also involves the use of living organisms and bioprocesses in engineering, technology, medicine and agriculture – in other words, the application of scientific and technical advances in the life sciences to develop commercial products.

This level 8 programme is designed to give the graduate experience with a wide range of modern computing skills. Students will learn cutting edge programming techniques, data analytics, UX design, web architecture plus many other skills. Students can practice honing core computational and problem solving skills needed for any 21st Century technology driven society, in a vibrant and modern campus. 

Economics is the study of people in the ordinary business of life. It is about the choices and decisions that we make and the consequence of these decisions. The BSc Applied Economics is a degree in Economics with a difference. It is a 4 year degree combining the study and application of Economics with personal, professional development and the opportunity to go on work placement or study abroad.

You will study a range of modules from Marine Biology research at home and abroad (e.g. Spain or Portugal) to Environmental Management and Biodiversity / Conservation. You will be studying an exciting mix of subjects including Marine Biology, studies of rivers and lakes, ecology and zoology.

Year one involves the study of a range of Science modules and year two focuses on Biology - the science of life. Biologists explore and learn how organisms are constructed and how they function. This involves the study of reproduction, growth and development and how organisms capture and use raw materials and energy. Year three covers areas such as fisheries, pollution control, the environment and aquatic biology where the main activity entails the monitoring of the aquatic environment.

You will study a range of modules from Marine Biology research at home and abroad (e.g. Spain or Portugal) to Environmental Management and Biodiversity / Conservation. This programme focuses on Freshwater and Marine Ecology. The sustainable development of renewable resources in the face of the rapidly expanding population and developing economy is a consistent theme throughout the programme. Graduates learn about the relevant ecological processes and gain an understanding of how they should be managed in a responsible and beneficial manner and the legal framework which seeks to protect them from undue exploitation. 

This course also prepares students for the emerging area of internet and telephone health care delivery. Clinical experience is an essential element of the course. Placement occurs in each year of the course, which allows the student to put theory into practice in a real health care setting.

The BA in Applied Language and Translation Studies (ALTS) is a unique degree that aims to prepare a new generation of translators and language professionals for global career opportunities. You will study two foreign languages with exciting combinations that include Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. Plus this dynamic degree allows you to explore the principles behind language, culture, translation and intercultural communication.

This programme aims to produce graduates with a high level of competence in at least two languages combined with a specialist knowledge of the societies in which those languages are spoken. The course also offers the unusual opportunity to take three languages to degree level. Graduates will also possess professional expertise in an area such as Law, Marketing, Politics and International Relations, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or Technical Communication. All languages are available at an advanced level, with German, Japanese and Spanish also available at beginners' level.   

Microbiology is all about understanding how microorganisms affect our world in crucial ways, from improving healthcare to protecting the environment and driving new technologies.

This course dives into how microbes are used to diagnose diseases, clean up pollution, and create bio-based solutions and biological products for industries. It focuses on three main areas: Diagnostic Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology, and Industrial Microbiology.
