This programme allows students to study a wide array of Home Economics and Business related modules.  This programme is the first in its kind as it is the only programme that offers a BA (Hons) in Home Economics and Business nationally.  Furthermore, the opportunities upon successful completion are vast.

Graduates may decide to pursue a Professional Master of Education (PME) in Home Economics and Business or decide to work as a Home Economist with families in a community setting. Graduates also have the knowledge, skills and competencies to work in area’s of food, nutrition, textiles, household technology (to name but a few). 

This degree is delivered in partnership with Teagasc and South East Technological University. It blends science, practical skills, and business, covering plant production, landscape design, food crops, and sustainability. With a 15 week industry placement, graduates earn Green Cert status. This course suits those passionate about plants, the environment, sustainable food production, or pursuing a dynamic career in horticulture, landscaping, or agribusiness.

This is an exciting course, which includes a compulsory overseas work placement. Students take two work placements during this course, in the summer of 2nd year and in the summer of 3rd year.

The Human Health and Disease degree trains students for work in the field of biomedical research. It brings to life the fascinating connections between structure and function in the human body and explores the health and disease continuum in detail, including teaching on how medical therapies act to treat or even prevent disease.

As an example, understanding brain structure and biochemistry allows us to appreciate how neurons communicate and this in turn is helping biomedical researchers and clinicians to identify new and effective ways to treat and prevent diseases such as dementia.

Nutrition is the interaction between food and our health and is becoming increasingly important in our society. Human Nutrition in ATU Sligo combines a number of scientific disciplines to provide a thorough understanding of the role of diet and nutrition in health and in the prevention of major diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis. The degree gives students a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between diet and health. Students learn how to apply this knowledge to individual and population health, as well as providing safe and nutritious food to the consumer.

This degree blends the basic sciences, food science, physiology, biochemistry, psychology, and specialist nutrition modules in a unique and interesting way that gives students the knowledge, skills and training required to work as a nutritional or food scientist.

Immersive Software Engineering is a new computer science degree where you learn by doing. You get an integrated Bachelors/Masters qualification (level 9) in four years. You spend half your time learning on campus in a research-driven paradigm, in studios, working on projects, in teams, undergoing continuous assessment instead of end of term exams. You spend the other half of your time in paid residencies, where you solve some of society’s toughest problems in excellent companies.
