The Bachelor of Education in Home Economics and Religious Education is a full-time, concurrent teacher education degree leading to a National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) Level 8 honours degree.

Upon graduation students will meet all the Teaching Council requirements to be registered as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) of Home Economics and Religious Education. 

Students are educated in the most current methodologies and technologies available to enhance the teaching of their subject areas at post-primary level. The degree programme includes four years of modules in Mathematics and Business Studies. These are taken concurrently with education modules, which include theoretical, pedagogical and professional studies along with a number of school placement experiences.

The overall aim of the two stage programme is to enable learners to develop the knowledge, skills, and competence to work as autonomous practitioners, subject to practice supervision, promoting and supporting the holistic needs of children from 0 to six years, and/or to take responsibility for a room or area in an ELC setting*.

This award also provides the learner with the opportunity to transfer and progress into further and higher education and training.

The current qualification requirement for room leaders is Level 6 (DCEDIY, register of recognised Early Years qualifications.) Qualifications for different roles in ELC may be subject to change in line with evolving national policy.

The programme leads to a new award, the Advanced Certificate in Early Learning and Care 6M21471.

This programme has been designed to allow graduates to work in an industry embarking on the rapid transition to electrified propulsion, namely Electric Vehicle. We are delighted to be supported in the roll-out of this course by Jaguar Land Rover and Hyundai who are major players in Ireland in the transition to Electric Vehicles. The programme covers technology associated with a wide range of vehicles, including cars, public transport vehicles, goods vehicles, and specialist industrial vehicles.

This course will educate you to an honours level in electrical and electronic engineering. It meets the educational standard required for chartered engineering membership of Engineers Ireland.

You can specialise in Power Systems Engineering, Control Engineering, Communications Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or Computer Engineering.

This course produces specialised engineers with the skills in the areas of Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Electrical Services, Control, Automation, Energy Production and Renewable Technologies. Students design, supervise and operate complex systems and products within topics such as circuits, sensors, power and control systems and automation.

This course is designed for aspiring technicians who are eager to deepen their understanding of electrical systems and renewable energy solutions.

The course explores cutting-edge sustainable systems, practices and technologies, including electrical, solar, wind and energy management solutions required to transition towards a more sustainable energy future.

On completion of this four-year apprenticeship, you will become a fully qualified electrician, with a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft – Electrical.

As an electrician you will be involved in the installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance of various wiring systems and services in domestic, commercial and industrial applications. Your work will range from wiring domestic houses and retail units, to more complex systems involving process control and maintenance in industrial plants, hospitals and power stations. Electricians also service, maintain and repair electrical equipment, both domestic and industrial. If you are employed by the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) you will be working on electrical power supply and distribution.

Electricians employed by electrical contractors are usually engaged in installation of lighting, heating and power equipment and the repair of existing equipment and appliances. If you work in industrial employment you will generally be engaged in the maintenance and repair of factory plant, machinery and generating equipment. Many apprentices use their apprenticeship qualification as a platform to launch careers such as engineers, managers, owners of businesses, teachers and instructors amongst others.

You may then choose to either work as an electrician with a range of employers or work in a self-employed capacity.

Electrical and control engineering (E&CE) involves a variety of engineering roles from the day-to-day running of ECG machines and ventilators in hospitals to engineering technologist positions in manufacturing plants and the electrical power industry.

They can be responsible for the electricity supply and electronic systems in unusual and exciting work environments such as cruise liners and aircraft. They also develop and install high-security alarm systems, advanced lighting, and automated production equipment.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering involves developing technologies required for our future needs in such areas as communication, electrical energy, transport, healthcare and entertainment. Electrical and Electronic Engineers are involved in advances in medical technology, mobile phones, wireless communications, electrical power systems, renewable energy, electric vehicles, e-commerce and the internet-of-things. 

The BEng Hons Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree will prepare you to become a professional electrical engineer, working on electrical products and systems, from research and design to installation. It will be your job to deal with the input of power to electrical systems, as well as with data acquisition and gathering.

You will be qualified to work in many areas, including power generation and control, transportation, IT, manufacturing, construction and telecommunications.

Most electrical engineers work with large-scale electrical systems, such as using electricity to transmit energy, however a wide range of technologies are being developed, from household appliances and installing lighting within buildings, to power stations and satellite communications.

Providing electrical power in a modern economy is about generation, distribution and use in a safe, economic and sustainable way. Fossil fuel energy now combines with solar, wind and tidal energy to create “embedded” generation which needs a “smart grid” to automatically manage user production and demand while maintaining the quality of the supply.

MTU’s electrical engineering course is designed to equip technologists for this environment.

The general fields of study are renewable generation, transmission and distribution, plant automation, motor control, power systems planning, and industrial management and services. The high academic standard of the course is complemented by a strong emphasis on applications and project work. State-of-the-art lab equipment and software prepares graduates for the work environment. Class work is supplemented by field trips to major employers within the greater locality.

This programme of study will cover all the major components to allow you to become a successful Electrical Engineer. These include all the traditional topics such Electrical Machines, Electrical Power Systems, Power Electronics, Energy Management, Energy Storage and Electrical Automation. Given the increasingly important role of data in the generation and use of electricity it also includes much more modern topics such as Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence which are necessary to make electricity systems smarter and more secure. All of these topics build on foundational engineering modules which are taken in years 1 and 2 of the programme. 

Electrical Engineering is primarily concerned with the generation, transmission and  distribution of Electrical power, the design and development of electrical machines and equipment and the specification of electrical service plans for industrial buildings and facilities.

This programme is designed to produce graduates with a detailed knowledge of Electrical, Control & Automation Engineering and the skills necessary to identify, formulate,and solve industrial electrical & automation engineering problems. The Electrical Engineer is required to lead fault-finding and trouble-shooting of complex electrical and control equipment and to work with colleagues to achieve project success on time and within the resources available.

Electrical engineering is a diverse and challenging profession concerned with the design, development and control of electrical energy and equipment upon which our technological society so largely depends.This programme will provide graduates with the key skills necessary to perform roles in several industry disciplines, including power systems operation and protection, maintenance and commissioning of control and automation systems. It develops advanced knowledge in the areas of Electrical Power Systems and Power Quality and Advanced Control and Automation Systems.
