The BSc Computing prepares students to become modern computing professionals capable of designing, building and deploying intelligent software systems, data-driven applications and secure cloud solutions.

Students develop strong foundations in programming, modern software development practices, software engineering, web and mobile technologies, cybersecurity and cloud computing while learning how Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques are applied responsibly to real-world challenges.

This programme aims to provide the academic knowledge and practical skills needed for a foundational computing qualification with specialisation in the area of software development.

The programme focuses on theoretical knowledge and practical skills in core areas such software development, database technology, computer networking, operating systems, computer security and web technologies while also offering applied skills in contemporary topics such as processing big data, cloud platform development and problem solving and algorithms.

Computing is the study of how computers and computer systems work and how they are constructed and programmed. As computing increasingly impacts on every aspect of our lives, it is also becoming a more evolved and complex area.

While computing may be of general interest to students, it’s often difficult to know which area of specialisation will be of most interest. This course has been designed to give students the broadest possible choice before choosing a specialisation.

This course will provide students with a solid grounding in the computing fundamentals but is flexible to allow students to shape their experience to focus on what interests them. This allows them entry into a widely varied industry with the specialised skills of their choosing, while also having a grasp of the basics across other computing areas.

Students will learn skills in coding skills from application and web development to front and backend development, problem solving and critical thinking, and communication and collaboration skills.

Our Bachelor of Science in Computing provides you with a range of both theoretical and practical skills to advance in the computer industry. This degree includes lots of time spent in computer labs creating programs and solving problems. The aim is to teach students how to use industry standard tools and techniques and then explain the concepts behind them. Creativity, problem solving, persistence and critical thinking are key skills which are developed during the degree. New high-tech computer teaching labs will open at ATU Sligo in 2023 and give students access to the latest advancements in technology.

The aim is to teach students how to use industry standard tools and techniques and then explain the concepts behind them. Creativity, problem solving, persistence and critical thinking are key skills which are developed during the course. At the end of Year 1, we counsel students on their next step, offering the following programmes to join: Computing, Software Development, and Games Development.

After Year 3, students may choose to continue their study in that computer programme to acquire a Level 8 honours degree (all but Games Development offer a Level 8 degree).

The Higher Certificate in Computing is a two year programme where students begin in this shared first year alongside all other computing students across our programmes. At the end of Year 1, we counsel students on their next step, offering the following programmes to join: Computing, Computer Networks and Cyber Security, Software Development, and Games Development.

Data Science, also known as Big Data Analytics is the process of examining large amounts of data of a variety of types (big data) to uncover hidden patterns, unknown correlations and other useful information. Such information can provide competitive advantages over rival organizations and result in business benefits, such as more effective marketing and increased revenue. Data Science has in turn been the big enabler for the expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a truly mass-market technology. AI relies on the patterns found in data to make decisions.  

This program at Dublin College Blackrock (formerly BFEI) is a practical, one-year course designed to bridge the gap between traditional administrative roles and the modern digital workplace. Located in Blackrock village, this course focuses on equipping students with the essential IT and organizational skills required for both on-site and remote work environments. Students receive comprehensive training in the Microsoft 365 suite, mastering file sharing, remote collaboration, and industry-standard applications. By blending core business administration with advanced digital proficiency, the program ensures graduates can confidently navigate contemporary office technologies and effectively manage digital workflows.

This programme of study fosters the development of creative thinking, and the development of interpersonal and project management skills and competencies required to work in the technology sector. You will develop skills in a variety of software tool-kits and applications through hands-on practical development work, and the production of rich media and web application content for a wide range of platforms. The programme places a significant emphasis on practical skills and you will work individually and in groups on a variety of projects. 

The programme presents an opportunity to study exciting new areas in 2D & 3D graphics, animation, dynamic web design & development, video production and database technologies for multi-platform environments. You will develop skills in a variety of software toolkits and applications through hands-on practical development work, and the production of rich media and web application content for a wide range of platforms.

The programme places a significant emphasis on practical skills and you will work individually and in groups on a variety of projects. This programme of study fosters the development of creative thinking, and the development of interpersonal and project management skills and competencies required to work in the technology sector.

A degree in Computer and Information Technology gives you a grounding in a broad range of information technology subjects as well as the skills to manage and administrate complex digital infrastructure.

The course develops applied computing, interpersonal, communication and IT skills and readies graduates to develop, select, deliver, manage and maintain cutting-edge IT infrastructures and advanced IT systems. It is ideal for students who are interested in IT and are keen to learn programming, web development, database design and human-computer interaction, it also requires team working skills and nuanced interpersonal interaction.

The overall aim of this programme is to provide its learners with the necessary theoretical and practical skills, knowledge and competence, to gain a comprehensive, specialised and in-depth, understanding of the area in Information Technology. 

During this course, you’ll learn coding and programming, and get to grips with databases, operating systems and networks. But you’ll also study innovation and entrepreneurship, project management and presentation skills. In your last year, you can even develop your own app, and build both a prototype and a rock-solid business plan.

The course builds strong foundational knowledge in the areas of Mathematics, Statistics and Programming. Well-rounded computing skills are developed allowing students to focus in on high-tech areas within the data and computing domains.

This degree integrates Software Design and Development skills, with the Computing Systems on which applications are deployed, and an understanding of the DevOps tools and processes to manage their delivery. Students have a strong interest in software and enjoy the more technically focused and systems-driven aspects of Computing to aim to streamline their software development processes, improve team collaboration, and enhance the overall efficiency and quality of their software delivery.
