The B.A. (Honours) in Psychology will help you explore how the brain works and help you make sense of the human impact on the world in which we live. You will explore the thoughts, feelings and actions of individuals and groups and understand how we think, behave and make decisions. The study of Psychology at Carlow College allows insight into countless intriguing facets of cognitive function.

The study of Psychology builds our understanding of ourselves and others, and develops our capacity to support those in our communities who are marginalised, disadvantaged or face other life challenges.

This advanced course explores social issues of marginalisation such as disability, mental health and addiction. You will gain an understanding of the government and charitable services in our communities and the psychological interventions that support wellbeing and rehabilitation.

The focus of this course is developing the student’s self-awareness and interpersonal skills as well as practical skills around working with social systems and team dynamics in community workspaces.

This full-time one-year course is suited to anyone interested in the area of Psychology. It will equip students with a good grounding in theories of behaviour and society which they can bring into further study in Arts or Psychology degrees. It is also a good introduction for anyone thinking of switching into this area.

The BA (Hons) in Psychology is taught over 3 years full-time (or 4 years part-time). In the programme, learners engage with the core areas of psychology, including developmental, social, and cognitive psychology, abnormal psychology, psychotherapy, and neuropsychology.

A significant component of the programme is also dedicated to equipping learners with a strong capability in research methods, culminating in an independent research project.

An application for accreditation of this programme has been submitted to The Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI).

Based in the university’s Mayo’s campus in Castlebar, this programme helps to address a pressing need for skilled psychologists in the region. Completion of a PSI accredited undergraduate degree is an important first step in any aspiring psychologist’s career. Students with a second-class honours from a PSI accredited degree are eligible to apply for postgraduate training in a range of specialisations in psychology.

This course will introduce you to psychological science and provide you with a broad understanding of the careers within the social and behavioural sciences. Over the year, you will learn how psychologists’ study, explain, and predict behaviour, and how abnormal thinking and behaving is classified and treated. Additionally, you will explore topics in social psychology, including the psychology of evil, attitudes and bias. You will learn how psychology is applied in settings such as mental health, school, and forensics. Other areas introduced include cognitive neuroscience, marketing, organisational and other community settings.

The degree covers all the major theories of psychology, as well as research methods and statistics for psychological data analysis. You will cover areas such as Brain and Behaviour, Social Psychology, Cognitive Psychology and Developmental Psychology.

Students will gain insight into many topics in Psychology including the biological basis of behaviour, the multiple layers of human development, and the different perspectives that underpin theories of human cognition, personality, and individual differences.

Students will acquire basic skills in the scientific and ethical research practices employed by psychologists in the study of human behaviour, and the critical capabilities for evaluating information and claims.

The BA in Psychology and Computing is a degree in which psychological research, theory, and knowledge is applied to a context of increasing importance to the modern world – the design, development, evaluation, and critical engagement with the technology and systems that increasingly surround us.

This course enables you to study psychology and understand how disruptive technologies are fundamentally changing how we think, behave and live. You’ll delve into development and lifespan psychology, biological psychology and neuropsychology, social psychology, cognitive psychology and the psychology of individual difference, along with gaining a detailed understanding of the disruptive technologies that significantly reshaping our world. You’ll also gain practical skills in programming languages such as R and Python, data visualisation and storytelling.

The BSc in Psychology and Mathematics is the first course in Ireland to integrate these subjects, preparing students for a career combining the interpretation of human behaviour with high-level numeracy, analytical and problem-solving skills. 

By doing this course, you’ll gain in-depth knowledge and understanding of each discipline alongside a broad critical perspective on contemporary society. You’ll delve into the different fields of psychology along with studying calculus, probability, computing, statistics and data analysis. Research literacy is also a core focus. Moreover, you’ll study applied subjects such as coding and cryptography, which integrate psychology and maths.

This four year honours degree in Psychology & Sociology provides you with a broad introduction to both disciplines in the first year, followed by coverage of the core areas of Psychology required for accreditation including: social, developmental, personality, biological and cognitive psychology as well as research methods and statistics. The BSc (Hons) in Public Health & Health Promotion (formerly the BA (Hons) in Health Promotion) is a full-time, four year, honours degree course of study that can be chosen within the Health Sciences Common Entry Route. This four year, honours degree course (chosen via the Health Sciences Common Entry Route) is approved by the International Union for Health Promotion and Education, which allows graduates to register as Accredited Public Health and Health Promotion Practitioners with diverse career opportunities in health services, industry, communities, charitable and voluntary organisations, working to improve the health and wellbeing of populations and individuals. This course aims to give you practical skills to work with a wide range of population groups in a wide range of settings about a wide range of health related topics (e.g. mental health, physical activity, and the environment).

Public Health Nutrition involves the promotion of good health through nutrition and the primary prevention of nutrition-related illness in the population. It focuses on applying food and nutrition knowledge, policy and research to improving the nutritional health of the population and high-risk or vulnerable subgroups within the population.

This public health nutrition degree has an international perspective. It examines how global, national and local community programmes can be designed to improve the nutritional status of the population as a whole and those at particular risk.

Our BSc Public Health Sciences programme offers an integrated learning experience in an interdisciplinary setting. It provides training in the range of skills involved in keeping people healthy and preventing disease.
