Build strong foundations
This degree provides a solid base to all three disciplines and you will study foundational topics such as introductions to micro and macroeconomics, political science and constitutional law. You don’t need to have done any of these before. As you progress through your studies you may choose to specialise in areas such as Urban and Regional Economics, Issues in American Politics or Family Law, to name a few. Geography

Geography is the study of Earth’s landscapes, peoples, places and environments. Fundamentally it is about the world in which we live. Geography offers a 21st century education by uniquely bridging the social sciences (human geography) with the natural sciences (physical geography).   Geography also covers increasingly important environmental issues where humans affect physical environments and vice versa.

History

The four-year programme allows students to lay firm foundations in the first two years, with wide-ranging modules on medieval and modern history, Irish, European, American, environmental and global history, as well as on historical methods and approaches. The final two years of the programme allow students the chance to study several specialist modules in-depth and to undertake independent research on a subject of their own choice.

Philosophy

This course offers the opportunity to engage in depth with questions of metaphysics (about the fundamental nature of reality), epistemology (the theory of knowledge), ethics (theories of right and wrong), political philosophy (the nature of the just state), philosophy of religion (reasoning about God), philosophy of mind (questions about thought, language and reason) and various other areas. We teach courses which have both systematic and historical emphases and in the higher years students can choose options and get to write a thesis on a topic of their own choice.

Sociology

If you want to understand the social changes taking place in the world today, and you are curious about people and society, then Sociology is for you. You will also gain the ability to understand topical issues and to present and communicate information and thoughts coherently. This course is ideal for anyone who wants to learn more about the natural world and play an active role in protecting it. Learners will gain the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to address the twin challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss at a local, national, and global level.

This course is delivered collaboratively with Whitehall College of Further Education and Dublin City University (DCU). Learners will spend one day a week in DCU as two modules will be taught in DCU at first year degree level. The course aims to provide a foundation for students who wish to progress to the Degree in Education and Training in DCU.

This four-year (Level 8) honours degree is accredited by the Teaching Council and will enable graduates to teach both Art and Design and Communication Graphics in Irish post-primary schools. This unique initial teacher education programme is designed to ensure that students attain the skills, knowledge and practice to become excellent teachers of both Art and Design and Communication Graphics. 

During the programme, students will develop their creativity and learn and apply emerging digital technologies to enable them to master these subjects. Projects focused on design, art techniques, CAD and graphics ensures that students can gradually gain the confidence, skills and competence to independently teach these subject to the highest level and standards.

This is a degree course allows you to combine the study of mathematics with computer science and post-primary teaching education. This is a four year concurrent initial teacher education programme and includes a number of school placement opportunities throughout the course. At the end of this four year course graduates will be eligible to teach computer science and mathematics

Design-led projects and a strong focus on design, woodwork, CAD and graphics ensures graduates are competent and confident in their role as a professional teacher. School Placements each year provide students with experience of the classroom, the role of the teacher and the whole school environment in a structured and supportive way.

Teachers of Irish are now in high demand in secondary schools, both in English-speaking schools and also in Gaelcholáistí. Our BEd degree enables students to qualify as teachers of Irish in combination with a second subject through a 4-year undergraduate teaching degree. The second subjects offered in this degree are French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Mathematical Studies.
