Nursing Studies is a one-year course for students wishing to train as Nurses both here in Ireland and in the UK. On completion of this course students can apply to Nursing Degree courses through the QQI entry system. It provides a solid foundation in Nursing theory and practice and allows students to accurately assess their suitability for a career in nursing. Applications are also invited from mature students wishing to pursue a career in nursing.

This course is aimed at those who wish to apply to colleges of nursing in Ireland or the UK, or to gain certification to work as a healthcare assistant in diverse care settings.

Nursing theory and practice is a core module and is taught by a clinical nurse practitioner. To prepare students for further study in nursing training, or for future employment, there is a strong emphasis on developing their practical skills and personal qualities throughout the course. Guest lectures from past students provide an insight into progression and networking opportunities.

Work experience makes up a core element of the course, where students attend different care settings to gain experience in all aspects of nursing. Practical training is carried out in the college using specialist equipment, such as hospital beds, manual and ceiling hoists, wheelchairs and sliding hoists.

This course provides essential elements of knowledge, competence and skill for academic progression or employment within the healthcare setting. The course provides the foundation skills and entry requirements to Degree Progammes in Ireland and the UK. The course encourages an appreciation of the work involved in caring for all age groups, and emphasises the importance of interpersonal communication.

Learners are offered a practical and theoretical introduction to a career in nursing. Learners complete work placement in a clinical/ward environment. Training is completed using simulation equipment to help learners understand how to care for patients. The programme gives learners a realistic insight into what the world of nursing entails and enhances learner's opportunities to get a place on a third-level college course. Many higher education colleges have reserved places on their courses for graduates of QQI Nursing Studies.

The purpose of this programme is to prepare the student for all aspects of nursing. The student is introduced to a wide variety of modules with a work placement element to the programme, which gives the student the opportunity and the experience of working in a setting of their choice under supervision.

The programme also prepares the students for progression to third level with UCAS and CAO preparation.

The overall aim of the programme is to provide the learner with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to work under supervision in a variety of healthcare settings and / or to progress to further or higher education and training.
