Journalism is the activity or profession of writing for newspapers, magazines or news websites, or preparing news for broadcast. This four-year course offers you the opportunity to learn all of the skills you need to work in the media – whether in TV or radio broadcasting, creating content and news online, or producing content for newspapers, magazines or social media platforms.

This one-year course in Journalism, Digital Media, and Public Relations equips students with the essential skills required to thrive as modern media professionals. The program blends core theoretical concepts with practical training across various media formats, teaching students how to craft and deliver compelling stories for a digital age. By exploring the use of multi-platform technology to engage diverse public audiences, learners develop a deep understanding of how to navigate the evolving news landscape while mastering the communication strategies vital for both journalism and public relations careers.

This practical journalism course focuses on developing multimedia skills to prepare students to work across all platforms: social, mobile, broadcast, digital and print journalism.

You will be trained to become a skilled digital content creator who can demonstrate essential skills and use of new technologies for the fast-moving 21st century media workplace. These includes smartphone photography and video journalism and the use of Adobe CC software for digital page production, social media campaigns and digital editing (sound and video). 

This one-year full time course equips the learner with the vocational skills and knowledge of radio broadcasting and journalism. The broadcasting industry is an exciting one, attracting people who are confident communicators with an interest in pursuing a career that is both varied and interesting. The College has made a significant investment in equipping two state-of-the art radio studios, resulting in a particularly well-resourced course.

Journalism is an important, exciting and dynamic field. It tells us about ourselves. The platforms through which we tell our stories are evolving, and in UL we offer students a chance to engage with and deliver stories across all digital and social media platforms. We help develop real-world practical and critical thinking skills in students so that their journalism is informed by a balanced sense of justice, accuracy and life-experience. 

Students of the BA in Journalism and New Media learn core practical journalism skills and, through the study of two specialised subjects, develop their capacities to engage critically with society and the structures of power that operate within it.

This one-year course will develop journalism industry skills for use in a multi-platform environment. Students will learn various ways of storytelling including podcasting, radio, video, print, and online publication. Students on this course will be prepared for a career in multi-media journalism, learning key skills such as research, content creation and podcast production.

Podcasting is a powerful tool for adult learners, especially in the field of journalism. It offers flexibility, allowing learners to engage with content at their own pace and time. For those interested in journalism, podcasts provide real-world examples of storytelling, interviews, and news reporting. Podcasts also create opportunities for discussions on current events, media literacy, and critical thinking. Furthermore, adult learners can experiment with creating their own podcasts, enhancing skills like research, interviewing, and audio editing. This handson experience deepens their connection to the journalistic process, offering an interactive approach to learning.

It is the only university degree programme in the subject in Northern Ireland and offers you the opportunity to study the theory and practice of journalism in context with determining factors such as law, economics, politics and technology. It provides you with a range of relevant practical and professional skills.

Studying Education as a minor in combination with another subject offered at Ulster is an excellent introduction to a future career path in the education sector. It will provide you with an introduction to the main concepts and concerns of contemporary educational theory and practice in both Northern Ireland, the UK and internationally.

Taking English as a Minor will allow you to develop a critically-informed knowledge of English literature in its historical range and depth. Through the study of literature across different genres, you will hone the ability to analyse text and form critical arguments, both in spoken and written form.

In addition to compulsory modules, you can pursue your own interests through a range of optional modules including 'Restoration & 18th-century Literature’ in second year, or 'Words in Freedom: Modernist Revolution in Literature’ in third year, among others.

As a major subject programme (four modules per full-time year), Journalism at Ulster is combined with another, minor subject in the Arts (two modules per full-time year) to make up a full degree programme. There is a range of subjects to choose from as your minor: Education, English and History.

You will learn to tell compelling stories through writing, photography, film and radio. A variety of additional creative elements like scriptwriting, studio engineering, podcasting and creative visual work, are also explored.

This award-winning program offers an immersive journey into the world of modern audio media, blending traditional broadcasting excellence with cutting-edge digital platforms. Students will master the art of podcasting and radio production, learning everything from professional sound engineering and editing to live studio management. 

Keyworker – Foundation Skills is a one-year QQI L5 course for those seeking to develop a career path in the essential role of Keyworker. Key working is a core role in the provision of individualised care to service users empowering them to be the drivers of their care planning, thereby facilitating them to achieve their own goals and developmental milestones. Key working is used throughout the social care sector to motivate service users to identify positive goals and improve their quality of life. This course will act as a foundational pathway to Higher Education to achieve a QQI Level 7/8 degree in a related area.

On completion of this three-year apprenticeship, you will become a fully qualified laboratory analyst, with a QQI Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor of Science Degree - Laboratory Analyst.

You may then work in a laboratory environment in biopharma, chemical manufacturing, medical devices and diagnostics, food and drink, and analytical testing laboratories.

The Laboratory Technician apprentice will be responsible for carrying out basic laboratory duties that may include sample collection, equipment calibration, solution preparation, stock control and glassware maintenance while conducting basic physical and analytical testing methods on raw materials, in-process or finished product. All work to be conducted and recorded in accordance with good laboratory practices.

With this two-year apprenticeship, you will become a fully qualified laboratory technician with a QQI Level 6 Higher Certificate in Science - Laboratory Technician.

You may then work in a laboratory environment in biopharma, chemical manufacturing, medical devices and diagnostics, food and drink, and analytical testing laboratories.

This one-year, QQI Level 5 full time course is aimed at those who are passionate about science and who wish to continue their scientific journey. The course equips learners with the vocational skills and knowledge in Biology, Chemistry & Physics, to work independently and under supervision in a science environment and to progress to further and or higher education and training.

The aim of this one year full time course is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge skill and competence to work independently and under supervision in a science laboratory and or to progress to further and or higher education and training.
