This is a four year honours degree aimed at preparing graduates for the pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical industry. Students will be exposed to a broad range of subjects and laboratory instrumentation relevant to the pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical industry.

Pharmaceutical science combines a broad range of biology and chemistry disciplines that are critical to the discovery and development of new drugs and therapies.

This course covers the development from discovery through to the formulation of medicines and highlights the importance of the regulatory requirements to get a new drug on the market. Over the three years, you’ll be introduced to the technical, regulatory and management aspects of pharmaceutical development and manufacturing. 

In this course students will experience a wide range of state-of-the-art instrumentation and equipment at SETU Waterford and learn from researchers actively involved in cutting edge areas such as separation science, pharmaceutical drug delivery, biotechnology and environmental science.

This degree is designed to develop your skill and competence to work as a laboratory analyst. The primary focus of the degree is on pharmaceutical analysis and it is very practically based, giving our students the key laboratory skills and the hands-on training industry requires. First year delivers core science modules and fundamental practical skills training and subsequent years build on these areas.

Recent advances in pharmaceutical science have focused on the rapid development of quality medicinal products that are safer, more effective and increasingly convenient for the patient. This has led to a significant demand for scientists with knowledge and skills related to the biopharmaceutical area.

The pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries comprise Ireland’s largest manufacturing sector and need highly trained graduates.

This unique Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (APS) internationally accredited programme provides the essential information and skills required for employment in the pharmaceutical sector. Given the wide range of disciplines required in driving modern manufacturing approaches this multidisciplinary course covers chemical-based and next generation biotech-based therapeutics and their formulation into safe and effective medicines of high and durable quality.

Pharmacology is the branch of science concerned with the study of how drugs interact with cells, tissues, and organisms. This course promotes the development of flexible interpersonal skills essential for effective interaction and engagement with colleagues in the working world. This is achieved through the implementation of team-based learning strategies in specific modules.  

A pharmacist is a healthcare team member specifically concerned with drugs and medicines. Pharmacy at UCC provides the confidence, skills, and knowledge to make a difference in the pharmaceutical arena.

The aim of the pharmacy programme is to provide you with an outstanding experience that allows you to become a pharmacist, and a leader in healthcare and innovation. You will be able to demonstrate the competencies for professional practice as a pharmacist.

We have revised the programme based on our years of experience, in consultation with students, patients, employers and other key stakeholders. The programme is accredited by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland for registration as a pharmacist in Ireland. 

Pharmacy is the study of all aspects of drugs, both natural and synthetic in origin, including their chemistry, their uses in medicines, and how they work within the body.

Pharmacists work in a variety of settings – community pharmacies, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and within the pharmaceutical industry, to name just a few. In many respects, their role as a key healthcare professional is to help people achieve the best results from their medications.

This programme prepares students for the future of pharmacy by teaching data analytics and advanced clinical skills, preparing you for future expansion of the role of pharmacists.

5-year leading to MPharm (level 9- required to be a pharmacist)

The ATU MPharm will deliver a programme of pharmacy education and training which meets all the requirements set out in pharmacy law, allowing the student to develop all the competencies necessary to become registered to practise as a pharmacist in Ireland.

Over the five years, students will have the opportunity to learn from and alongside pharmacists, clinicians, patients and other leading experts from a variety of fields, as well as undertaking structured work placements across the spectrum of pharmacy and healthcare practice.

Accredited by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI).

This programme is specifically designed to prepare students for modern practice by covering science, healthcare, professional practice, research, leadership, along with experiential placement, in an integrated way. Patient care and professionalism are central to the programme, in all its teaching and learning activities.

Work in this industry varies from dispensing over the counter medications, helping clients choose medical aids and appliances to demonstrating and selling cosmetics, perfumes etc. As well as a QQI qualification, learners complete the Irish Pharmacy Union’s Medicines Counter Assistant award.

This one year course is ideal for students who are passionate about science and medicine and prefer a hands-on approach to learning. You will study a range of science subjects at a practical level in modern science laboratories, with practical laboratory sessions forming an integral part of the programme. This course is suitable for learners who wish to work in a pharmacy or progress to university to study pharmacy.

This one year course would equip learners with relevant knowledge and experience to work as a pharmacy counter assistant or pursue a pharmacy technician qualification in the future. From dispensing over the counter medications, helping clients choose medical aids and appliances to demonstrating and selling products, this course covers the most relevant skills. This course will also focus on a range of health related subjects relevant to employment as a pharmacy assistant. Work Experience is within a retail pharmacy where as a pharmacy assistant, you can work as part of a team of health professionals in order to help customers achieve the best possible health outcome.
