It explores why works of art look the way they do and seeks to discover what they say about the societies that created them. It develops skills in visual analysis, critical assessment, and communication.

Students combine this subject with their choice of French, Italian or Spanish.

It develops skills in visual analysis, critical assessment, and communication.

History at Ulster will stimulate your intellectual curiosity and challenge you to think critically about the world around you. You will develop a wide range of written, verbal, and analytical skills through the study of the historical processes that have shaped modern society. You will explore topics such as Film and the Vietnam War, Witchcraft and Magic, the Russian Revolution, United States' Foreign Policy and many more.

If you are interested in teaching as a career you may decide to add Education to your degree ‘mix’ at undergraduate level before applying for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education after you have completed your degree. Each Education module usually involves a two hour lecture plus a one hour seminar each week. In addition, you will have the opportunity for undertaking directed independent learning, which will enhance your potential for self-motivated study.

The History modules at Trinity allow you to study a remarkable range of types of history – whether cultural or political history, military or social history, environmental history or the history of ideas – from the early Middle Ages to the very recent past. We offer survey modules allowing you to grasp the broad patterns in history, specialist modules where you can study topics of particular interest to you in small classes, and opportunities for you to pursue your own independent research.

The History programme combines the strength of a broad-based programme in the first two years, introducing all students to the sheer diversity of historical studies, with the freedom to explore areas of particular interest to individual students in the final two years. A range of modules covering medieval and modern periods, including Irish, European, and American history, as well as some modules exploring the skills and methods which historians use, and the kinds of debates in which historians engage.

There is the opportunity to concentrate on those parts of history which interest you most, and above all in the final year dissertation, an independent research project which very many students find the most rewarding part of their whole degree programme.

Political Science

Political Science will appeal to students who are excited about exploring the background to current events, the nature and use of power and how decisions are made that impact on wider society. If you are interested in having an in-depth knowledge of public affairs, developing critical and much sought after research skills and if your career interests lie in journalism, public service, teaching, public policy, international organisation and/or business then Political Science may be for you

Religion

This course offers you a choice of three possible directions of study after your first year. The first is a broad-based study of Religion and Theology, the second a specialisation in the Cultural Study of Religion, and the third in Christian Theology. Within the Cultural Study of Religion, you have the opportunity to explore the monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the religions of Asia and Africa, as well new atheistic and religious movements.

If you choose to specialise in Theology, you can investigate the development of Christian self-understanding in a number of different modes, including denominational, multidenominational and ecumenical aspects.

The Holistic Health programme at Ide Finglas is a comprehensive full-time course designed for individuals passionate about enhancing community wellbeing and supporting individual health. Suitable for both school leavers and mature students, the curriculum blends essential health and social care theory with intensive practical training. St. Angela’s College has an international reputation and an established record of excellence in Home Economics education. The role of a Home Economist in communities is very much established in other European and International countries. This level 8, four year degree (which is not an initial teacher education qualification) fulfils the gap that is currently demanded and required within Irish society. It is designed to attract applicants who are passionate about Home Economics and aspire to be Home Economists advocating for sustainable health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities.

This programme allows students to study a wide array of Home Economics and Business related modules.  This programme is the first in its kind as it is the only programme that offers a BA (Hons) in Home Economics and Business nationally.  Furthermore, the opportunities upon successful completion are vast.

Graduates may decide to pursue a Professional Master of Education (PME) in Home Economics and Business or decide to work as a Home Economist with families in a community setting. Graduates also have the knowledge, skills and competencies to work in area’s of food, nutrition, textiles, household technology (to name but a few). 

The aim of this programme is to enable the learner to develop the knowledge and skills to work in a supervisory or managerial role in the equine industry or to progress to further or higher education and training.

In North Connaught College, Sligo, our students will be facilitated to explore equine studies with a view to re-skilling/up-skilling and exploring concepts and subject areas that may interest the learner in future programmes or employment. It will also enable the student to take responsibility for supervising the running of a riding school, training or competition stables.

This training will equip the learner with the knowledge and skills for employment opportunities in the industry. This course aims to provide students with knowledge and skills relating to riding, breaking and training horses, preparation for sale, and encourage students towards Horse Sport Ireland and British Horse Society riding and coaching qualifications.

The sport horse industry contributes more than €700 million directly/indirectly to the Irish economyeach year, employing close to 12,500 directly and indirectly. Sport horse career opportunities include yard manager, competition rider, groom, breaking and training, coach, sales prep, and self – employed ventures such as equine tourism. In addition there are a number of career opportunities in supporting or service provider roles.
