Physical Sciences (TR063) at Trinity is a four year degree programme for students who like to solve problems. Whether it is studying galaxies, examining the potential of new lasers or investigating next generation nanomaterials, this degree pathway will prepare you for a lifelong career of solving problems in research, industry or business.

The Physical Sciences (Common Entry) course is designed for applicants who wish to enter a physical science course in MTU but are undecided about or wish to postpone selecting a designated chemistry or physics qualification until after they have had an opportunity to experience both disciplines.

Common Semester 1: The common semester 1 programme includes modules in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and Computing so that students will have completed an introduction to general science by the end of semester 1. At the end of semester 1, students choose the chemistry or physics degree course that they wish to pursue in semester 2.

Physics is the fundamental science, which seeks to understand the basic laws governing the structure of matter, the nature of energy and the physical forces that form our world. Its span of interest ranges from the nature of the short-range forces which operate inside the atomic nucleus to the origin and structure of the universe.

The aim of this programme is to satisfy those who have an interest in fundamental science, to find rewarding careers in the applications of physics to measurement science and technology. Non-destructive testing is a specialisation of the course, this is the science of testing materials and systems without dismantling or damage, utilising X-rays, ultrasound, scanning electron microscopes, etc.

There is a high emphasis on practical work and projects - the student completes a number of projects over the course of the programme, and these can range from building electronic guitars, to making heart monitors, to finding new ways to use electron microscopy.

In first year, you’ll gain a solid foundation in classical and modern physics, mathematics and computing, and invaluable laboratory exposure, before choosing the degree specialism you want to pursue: BSc in Applied Physics; BSc in Physics with Astronomy; BSc in Physics with Biomedical Sciences or the BSc in Physics with Data Analytics.

Astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects (stars, planets, comets, asteroids) and phenomena (cosmic radiation, dark energy). This course provides a solid grounding in physics and astrophysics, as well as planetary science, astronomy, astronomical instrumentation and techniques, and cosmology.

In the Physics of Medical Devices module, you’ll gain insights into the medical device industry, from the initial concept of a medical device to its manufacture. In the Diagnostic Imaging module, you’ll gain an understanding of the principles of how an image is formed using x-rays or sound waves, and be able to critically assess the important design features in such imaging devices for optimum image quality. 

This course equips students with the skills to manage the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injured individuals by offering a unique blend of academic theory, practical workshops and clinical placements in the final year. The Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy is a four-year degree programme which includes a total of 31 weeks of clinical practice in the last two years of the programme. The first year provides a foundation in Anatomy and Physiology, communication and behaviour, and an Introduction to Physiotherapy Practice. Over the remaining three years you will undertake studies in the various disciplines of physiotherapy including cardiorespiratory care, clinical neurology and musculoskeletal disorders for people across the lifespan. Research and evidence-based practice are core elements underpinning the programme.

It involves treating patients of all ages with a range of illnesses and conditions, including those with back and neck problems, sports injuries, arthritis, or those recovering from strokes and operations. The focus of our treatment is exercise prescription.
