Common Semester 1: The common semester 1 programme includes modules in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and Computing so that students will have completed an introduction to general science by the end of semester 1. At the end of semester 1, students choose the chemistry or physics degree course that they wish to pursue in semester 2.

Physics is the fundamental science, which seeks to understand the basic laws governing the structure of matter, the nature of energy and the physical forces that form our world. Its span of interest ranges from the nature of the short-range forces which operate inside the atomic nucleus to the origin and structure of the universe.

Physics studies how our Universe works, from the smallest atomic nucleus to the largest galaxy. It includes areas such as quantum theory, relativity and particle physics, and lies at the heart of most modern technology - for example the computer and the laser.

This BSc degree is aimed at students who wish to continue their exploration of physics beyond school, and apply their knowledge to our physics-based world of the 21st century.

The aim of this programme is to satisfy those who have an interest in fundamental science, to find rewarding careers in the applications of physics to measurement science and technology. Non-destructive testing is a specialisation of the course, this is the science of testing materials and systems without dismantling or damage, utilising X-rays, ultrasound, scanning electron microscopes, etc.

There is a high emphasis on practical work and projects - the student completes a number of projects over the course of the programme, and these can range from building electronic guitars, to making heart monitors, to finding new ways to use electron microscopy.

This BSc Physics with Medical Applications degree is aimed at students who want to learn about the application of the most fundamental of sciences to 21st-Century Medicine. Students undertaking this degree will still obtain a thorough grounding in modern physics, but will also take modules that gives them expertise in modern medical techniques, from CAT and MRI scans through to radiation and laser applications.

In the Physics of Medical Devices module, you’ll gain insights into the medical device industry, from the initial concept of a medical device to its manufacture. In the Diagnostic Imaging module, you’ll gain an understanding of the principles of how an image is formed using x-rays or sound waves, and be able to critically assess the important design features in such imaging devices for optimum image quality.

It involves treating patients of all ages with a range of illnesses and conditions, including those with back and neck problems, sports injuries, arthritis, or those recovering from strokes and operations. The focus of our treatment is exercise prescription. 

Physiotherapists are healthcare professionals responsible for developing, maintaining and restoring movement and functional ability in adults and children using evidence-based practice. Studying Physiotherapy in UCD will provide you with the skills and qualifications required to practice as a physiotherapist upon graduation. The Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy is a four-year degree programme which includes a total of 31 weeks of clinical practice in the last two years of the programme. The first year provides a foundation in Anatomy and Physiology, communication and behaviour, and an Introduction to Physiotherapy Practice. Over the remaining three years you will undertake studies in the various disciplines of physiotherapy including cardiorespiratory care, clinical neurology and musculoskeletal disorders for people across the lifespan.
