Journalism is part of the combined campus subject programme at Ulster, Coleraine. It is the only university degree programme in the subject in Northern Ireland and offers you the opportunity to study the theory and practice of journalism in context with determining factors such as law, economics, politics and technology. It provides you with a range of relevant practical and professional skills.

Taking English as a Minor will allow you to develop a critically-informed knowledge of English literature in its historical range and depth. Through the study of literature across different genres, you will hone the ability to analyse text and form critical arguments, both in spoken and written form.

In addition to compulsory modules, you can pursue your own interests through a range of optional modules including 'Restoration & 18th-century Literature’ in second year, or 'Words in Freedom: Modernist Revolution in Literature’ in third year, among others.

As a major subject programme (four modules per full-time year), Journalism at Ulster is combined with another, minor subject in the Arts (two modules per full-time year) to make up a full degree programme. There is a range of subjects to choose from as your minor: Education, English and History.

We present History in unique and exciting ways. You will learn mainly in interactive workshops rather than in lectures and seminars. You will create podcasts and digital presentations, design websites, organise conferences and produce research portfolios.

This exciting new course offers the best of both worlds- journalism AND photography, offering you superb employment and third level progression opportunities. You will learn to tell compelling stories through writing, photography, film and radio. A variety of additional creative elements like scriptwriting, studio engineering, podcasting and creative visual work, are also explored.

This course is the ideal foundation for a broad range of third level courses in the humanities or media. It is also ideal for anyone looking to establish themselves as a writer, podcaster, film maker or journalist. Students are encouraged to aim for full creative expression, so they can understand themselves and the world through their work. Students have access to an on-campus radio production facility as part of their training programme.

This award-winning program offers an immersive journey into the world of modern audio media, blending traditional broadcasting excellence with cutting-edge digital platforms. Students will master the art of podcasting and radio production, learning everything from professional sound engineering and editing to live studio management. 

This diploma will provide participants with case-management leadership skills and practical training on how to run a case in any forum. It will also prepare participants for adjudicatory and tribunal roles, and will explore the skills needed to preside over various forums.

Keyworker – Foundation Skills is a one-year QQI L5 course for those seeking to develop a career path in the essential role of Keyworker. Key working is a core role in the provision of individualised care to service users empowering them to be the drivers of their care planning, thereby facilitating them to achieve their own goals and developmental milestones. Key working is used throughout the social care sector to motivate service users to identify positive goals and improve their quality of life.  

On completion of this three-year apprenticeship, you will become a fully qualified laboratory analyst, with a QQI Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor of Science Degree - Laboratory Analyst.

You may then work in a laboratory environment in biopharma, chemical manufacturing, medical devices and diagnostics, food and drink, and analytical testing laboratories.

The Laboratory Technician apprentice will be responsible for carrying out basic laboratory duties that may include sample collection, equipment calibration, solution preparation, stock control and glassware maintenance while conducting basic physical and analytical testing methods on raw materials, in-process or finished product. All work to be conducted and recorded in accordance with good laboratory practices.

With this two-year apprenticeship, you will become a fully qualified laboratory technician with a QQI Level 6 Higher Certificate in Science - Laboratory Technician.

You may then work in a laboratory environment in biopharma, chemical manufacturing, medical devices and diagnostics, food and drink, and analytical testing laboratories.

This one-year, QQI Level 5 full time course is aimed at those who are passionate about science and who wish to continue their scientific journey. The course equips learners with the vocational skills and knowledge in Biology, Chemistry & Physics, to work independently and under supervision in a science environment and to progress to further and or higher education and training.

The aim of this one year full time course is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge skill and competence to work independently and under supervision in a science laboratory and or to progress to further and or higher education and training.

This is a one-year QQI Level 5 full time course. The overall aim of the programme is to provide the learner with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence in the area of science to work independently and under supervision in any science laboratory environment or in the field and to progress to further and or higher education and training.

The design studio is central to Landscape Architecture. You’ll spend most of your time in the studio, pursuing individual and small group project work. You’ll learn by doing design projects that allow you to develop creative skills and apply knowledge taught through lectures, seminars, drawing classes, field trips, reviews, readings, individual and group tutorials. In your third year you will also gain professional experience interning in a landscape related company / institution.

Landscape Architecture is a broad and emerging domain which centres on building an understanding of how to create functional and aesthetically pleasing outdoor public spaces. It is one of the most interesting, dynamic and rewarding areas of study and career pathways to follow. This course has been tailored to provide you with a range of formative skills, knowledge and experiences needed to pursue a career as a Landscape Architect. It will be of interest to school leavers, professionals, horticulturalists, or contractors wishing to upskill and anyone with an interest in art and design wishing to broaden their skill base.

This module will equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to plan, construct and maintain hard and soft landscape features.

This programme has been designed to help enable participants to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out appropriate landscape pre - building tasks, construct hard landscape features and structures, prepare and sow the ground with a variety of landscaping plants and be capable of maintaining soft landscaping features to a high standard.

The Language and Linguistics course aims to give students foundational knowledge of the areas of linguistic theory and its applications. These areas include phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, language acquisitionand discourse analysis. Primary teaching methods involve a mix of lectures and seminars both of which are heavily centred around working with examples of language data. In addition, a central element of a linguistics programme is the experience of independently collecting and analysing data and we aim to develop this skill in our students from the very first semester of the degree.

We have designed our course to give you the flexibility to undertake a pathway which best suits your needs, so Language & Linguistics can be studied in conjunction with Counselling Studies. This allows you to combine your interest in language with the study of a vocational area in which effective use of language is central.

This course is specifically designed to bridge the gap between secondary education and university, providing a rigorous foundation in cultural, social, and linguistic studies. A core component of the curriculum is the development of proficiency in two major European languages: French and Spanish, equipping students with the communication skills necessary for an increasingly interconnected global landscape.

The aim of the programme is to educate teachers and equip them with the skills and aptitudes for a successful career as a languages teacher. Graduates from the programme will be qualified to teach their chosen languages at both Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate level.

This course is designed for students who are seeking a high level of language and intercultural competency by developing effective communication and analytical skills. The programme takes a holistic approach to language by fostering linguistics, alongside literary and cultural approaches. Students can choose from Irish, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Latin and Ancient Greek. Modules are available in Portuguese and Welsh.

The Bachelor of Laws (Hons) is recognised by the Honorable Society of King's Inns and the Law Society of Ireland. Studying law at undergraduate level has an appeal to any student considering a career in the legal profession. A Bachelor of Laws degree provides a firm foundation for students wishing to qualify as a solicitor or barrister.

The study of law improves and develops the student’s power of reasoning, clarity of thought and the ability to analyse and express complicated ideas.
